Default Fourteen Foods That keep You Healthy

I'm one fickle pickle. Since Oprah trimmed down again she's gained
points with me and her shows are hot, hot, hot lately. Yesterday's
program on anti aging in a health sense was excellent and the highlight
was dreamboat Dr. Stephen Pratt discussing fourteen foods that are
essential and effective for health. I use 'em all except for soy.

What are the fourteen SuperFoods? Many may already be part of your
daily meals, while some may make occasional appearances. But all are
supermarket-friendly nutrition powerhouses:

Beans,Blueberries, Broccoli, Oats, Oranges,
Pumpkin,Salmon,Soy,Spinach,Tea -- green or black. Tomatoes, Turkey,
Walnuts, Yogurt

SuperFoods Rx not only outlines the amazing health benefits of these
fourteen foods, it also includes delicious recipes, kitchen tips, and
shopping suggestions that will make the SuperFoods lifestyle simple and
irresistible.

Correction, I also can't use oats because of Celiac Disease.

Soy is the kiss of death for those with hypothyroidism. I should
know, for myself, as I was a pound-a-day tofu eating vegetarian
(and drank soy milk) for nearly 20 years thinking it was "healthy"
while I was lethargic and getting fatter and fatter. Most of the 70
pounds I lost just fell off me when I ditched the soy. Even before
the weight came off, I felt more energetic and alive almost instantly.

cinnamon and grapefruit are also good candidates. Both may reduce
blood glucose levels - of course, cinnamon being a spice rather than a
food. Besides salmon, other fatty fish are as good - herring, for
example. Besides walnuts, almonds are also good - and are in
convenient almond butter. I would disagree with "turkey" - fish is
better. Finally, they omitted "olive oil" - on many "superfoods"
lists.

No mention of almonds. I've been hearing a lot about almonds
better better than walnuts (one reason being that the sat-fat is
half any other nut).

I don't think this is universally true. I am also hypothyroid. While
I don't use tons of soy protein, I consume some almost every day in
the breakfast cereal I eat and the energy bars I use. I feel fine,
and when I've experimented with eliminating soy entirely I didn't feel
any different. Nor has it affected my weight one way or the other.

I asked my endocrinologist about soy, and he just said I should avoid
eating it within a few hours of taking my synthroid. But since I
don't eat anything within a few hours of taking the synthroid, that's
not a problem.

I looked it up today, oddly enough as my protein powder is running low and I
need to decide if I am going to buy it again.

Apparently, the isoflavones in soy act like hormones, estrogen in
particular. On the thyroid, there are estrogen receptors. The soy
isoflavone is not exactly identical to estrogen and is much weaker and there
are some reports that soy can cause long term damage to the thyroid.

My take? Well, people have been eating soy for years. However, on the
arguments for Soy is that the Japanese and Chinese do not get breast CA or
heart disease with the frequency of those of us in the US and they have a
soy based diet. However, most of these oriental people do not eat nearly
the amount of Soy recommended. Also, if you recall, after the big hype
about soy, people started selling soy supplements, etc. It is the American
way. We find out something is good and we want more of it. Also, the fact
that use so much soy means that they have displaced their importance on red
meats. Does abstention from red meat have anything to do with incidence of
disease?

It is an interesting internet search - wish I had saved the links. One of
the distressing things was like everything else, there were militant anti
soy people and people who proclaimed soy was the answer to every possible
ailment that is known to man. I think the answer lies somewhere in the
middle.

Hi, the Harvard nutrition site points out the mixed reviews about soy.
Yes, it may prevent heart disease. However, this scared me: "So the
news for soy isn't all rosy. Unsettling reports suggest that
concentrated supplements of soy proteins may stimulate the growth of
breast cancer cells.(10, 11) Too much soy could also lead to memory
problems. Among older women of Japanese ancestry living in Hawaii,
those who relied on the traditional soy-based diet were more likely to
have cognitive problems than those who switched to a more Western
diet.(12) These preliminary findings suggest that too much
anti-estrogen in the wrong place at the wrong time could be harmful."
