View Full Version : Newsreader programs?

I'm just wondering what kind of programs people use/would recommend for
newsgroup reading. I'm about to start on what I'm calling a "visitation
schedule" with my fiance - he lives in another province and I'll be
going to stay with him about a week out of every month. I won't have my
computer with me but will be taking all my essential files (especially
the HHH files!) on CDrw and USBdrive (gotta love technology). However I
need to have some way to access the newsgroup from his place. I'm not
comfortable using Google for accessing newsgroups on a regular basis -
it's just too difficult for me to use. I use Netscape's newsreader at
home. I've had a quick look at Free Agent and it looks like it might be
decent.

Any advice?

Why not download the Netscape install file before you leave and install it
on his machine when you get there. I use Agent but it takes getting used to.

Other alternatives would be:

Mozilla - 11 MB - browser, mail, news
http://www.mozilla.org/

Firebird - 6 MB - browser only (zip file, download and unzip)
http://www.mozilla.org/projects/firebird/release-notes.html

Thunderbird - 9 MB mail & news only (zip file, download and unzip)
(use with Firebird)
http://www.mozilla.org/projects/thunderbird/

These new products are the long term replacements for Netscape so the
learning curve would me mininal.

Have you thought about splurging for a laptop? Maybe a used one would be
cheap enough for you to afford. That would certainly make your trips to your
fiance easier.

I use Outlook Express and have no problems with it. Also is should be on
about any computer you use any where else.

Thanks for the recommendations Laura! I'll have to check those out. As for the
laptop, I'm afraid that at the moment the only laptop I can afford is an
Etch-a-Sketch!

I've got the full Agent and like it. I used the Free version for
months and then upgraded to the paid version. It offers a bit more
customization of buttons and such.

And you can move the entire DATA directory between computers to keep
your groups current between computers if you want.

Oh, I like being able to move the Data directory! I might have to switch
from Netscape then....

*sigh*

Too many decisions, too little time!

I moved from Netscape, too. A friend really recommended Agent.
Actually, I used a dos based newsreader for a long time and
occasionally go back to it. It was designed for an HP-dos handheld
computer. It is immune to viruses ans scripts and things like that.

My husband uses this too Ray and he also would agree that it is the best.
He only uses Outlook Express for our business stuff. It tried the Forte
Agent, but couldn't get the hang of it, so switched back to OE.
