Default Time to stock up on broth

There is a virus going around, as I learned last night in the E.R. It starts
with a painful stomach after eating a meal. About 8 hours later, I
practically couldn't stand upright. That was following with vomiting every
hour on the hour. I stuck it out until 4:30 am and finally went to the
hospital.

Their reaction? "Oh yeah, a ton of people have this virus!" They said it
typically lasts about three days and includes diarrhea. (I know, I know) I
got a liter of electrolytes and a shot of anti-nausea medication and some
pills for anti-nausea to take home. It seemed as if my body got on some
kind of weird schedule where it vomited every hour....

So, make sure you are prepared for this by having some chicken broth or beef
brother around the house. Only clear liquids are allowed for awhile.

I am stretching the limits of "clear liquids" to include hot chocolate....

Then don't be surprised if you keep vomiting for a while. You know that hot
chocolate is not what they meant by clear liquids.

Frankly while a person is still in the vomiting stage my doctor says don't
have anything more than a few sips of liquid or suck on some crushed ice.
After you stop vomiting for a couple of hours then you can go to clear
liquids and if you go several hours and are holding the liquids down then
you can go to easy on the stomach food bland foods and if you are still
holding that down in a few hours move on to more normal foods. I've been
told the key is do it in stages but if you vomit again back up and work your
way back thru the stages all over again.

Nope. No problemo with the hot chocolate. I had it 4 times yesterday. No
more vomiting, either.

Well, I guess that Promethazine is as good as the doc said it would be. It
does, however, put you right to sleep for a few hours. This morning, I had
some hot oatmeal. So far, so good. Maybe this virus is only a 2 day virus.
I certainly hope so!

I hope you feel better soon! Something like that went through my Mom's
retirement community like WILDFIRE over the last couple of months, and I
was SURE I would get it. Fortunately I managed to avoid it.
Unfortunately, my mom DIDN'T and it was one nasty piece of work.

I am concerned that it might go through my mother in law's assisted living
center. Today is the 4th day, and although the vomiting stopped a long time
ago, the diarrhea has not stopped. I even ate some food yesterday with no
problems---only to awaken this morning with vigorous 'problems.'

OTOH, I weighed myself and I'm down 7 1/4 pounds. So much for "water weight"
eh?

Have you tried taking any probiotics? It would help repopulate the good
bacteria in your intestines if the virus killed it off.

Hey, that's a good idea. I have some of them in the refrigerator, too. I
called the doc and asked for a prescription anti-diarrheal, but it has
occurred to me that "How in the heck am I going to get to Albertson's to
pick up a prescription?"

Thanks for the idea.

When I had an episode like that last year, my doctor asked why I hadn't
called in for assistance. I told her that I wouldn't have been able to
drive to the doctor's office or to a pharmacy. She told me that they
could have called in a prescription for an anti-nausea drug to the one
local pharmacy that delivers.

That's worth remembering. I tried to hold out until dawn but couldn't make
it. I will tell you that promethazine, the anti-nausea drug, sure
'encourages' sleep....

On the other hand, I called my doctor this morning and she won't call in a
anti-diarrhea prescription for me. She said, "Eat bananas." I don't have
bananas on hand and I sure am not dragging myself into the car just to pick
up bananas! I am pretty upset over this. What's the harm in giving me some
anti-diarrheal medication? I bet I could call back over to the ER and they
would call in a script for me. I think I'll give that a try.

Have you tried OTC Imodium? It works pretty well.
