There's hair all over the place. It comes out in thick clumps in the
shower. When I blowdry my hair, it gets all over the sink. It's
disgusting. It shows up well on my navy carpet, too.

lol, Carmen - I know you've told me time and time again, but the
thing is, when I went on low-cal, my hair thickened up again. It's
being depleted of nutrients on Atkins that does it.

But you said you didn't lose any weight on low-cal. So you can't know for
sure that it's "being depleted of nutrients" rather than weight loss that
does it.

Tell me: what nutrients were you getting on low-cal that you aren't getting
on Atkins? I'm not an Atkins dieter and I don't really have any reason to
defend it, but you've made a bunch of assumptions here that you ought to
think about. One is that there is some magic hair-preserving nutrient that
is present in your low cal diet but absent in your Atkins diet. The second
is that it is Atkins, rather than weight loss, that is causing your hair
loss. I suspect neither of these assumptions is the whole story, so I think
you should explore them a bit more carefully.

Or, if you don't like the way your body responds to what you are calling
Atkins, then do something else.

This is a direct quote from your post: '

"I get no Essential Fatty Acids b/c I don't eat fish & aren't taking
Omega-3."

You are not on the Atkins plan, which includes fish and healthy fatty acids.
Your post is typical of those who do their own made-up version of low-carb,
then
blame Atkins (or Eades or Heller ...) when it doesn't work right. You
ignore the advice of experienced posters such as Carmen who provide factual
information.

Those of us who truly follow the Atkins plan find that our hair is shinier,
thicker and healthier in the log run; I know mine is. How can you blame hair
loss on switching from Big Macs, ice cream, cake, cookies and spaghetti to
eating plenty of vegetables, meat, poultry, fish, nuts and berries along
with essential nutrient supplements? It's not the plan that is afoul, it's
your not following the plan appropriately that is the problem.

Hey everyone
A month ago, I told you guys how scared I was about starting to lose my hair on
Atkins, and that I was going off of it, and onto low-calorie. I started
low-calorie - and my hair replenished, but I didn't lose any weight - just
maintained. I got back to college, and my friend Beth, who I hadn't seen in 4
months, came up to me GUSHING about how great I looked & how much weight I
lost. Two other friends said the same thing in the next days later. :]

I figured I couldn't just give up on Atkins, on my goal... so I went
back on. I'm taking a One-A-Day Carb Smart multivitamin, and am on
Induction (for best
results). I get no Essential Fatty Acids b/c I don't eat fish & aren't taking
Omega-3.

I've noticed my hair is getting thinner again - from the thickness it used to
be. I want to stop this, if not reverse it, and don't know how.

The same thing happened to me when I first started low carbing, but it
was because I wasn't doing it right. I was still trying to eat low fat
at the same time as low carb and it had some bad effects. When I
deliberately included a lot of healthy (olive) oil and fish (omega3)
into my diet, my hair got better than ever before. I also drink wine
with meals, but had stopped doing that when I first started.
Reintroducing the wine (red) may also have had some beneficial effect,
I did that at the same time that I added fats to the diet. My skin
improved as well.

I don't do extreme low carb, I eat sufficient carbs from nutritious
sources to keep my energy levels high enough for my daily gym workouts,
but absolutely no unnecessary carbs. I try to cut trans and saturated
fats, but don't do low fat in any other respect. I had more energy when
I first started, while I still had a lot of weight to lose, but had to
increase carbs as my weight dropped to keep my energy levels high. My
hair and skin are in better shape now than they were when I was
overweight. Except for some loose skin where I have lost the most
weight, but that is slowly lessening with good diet and daily exercise.

The only other thing that I do, that many seem to be wary of, is eat a
lot of yogurt throughout the day. Sugar free flavored yogurt. I don't
know if it is a good or a bad thing, there are some very contradictory
claims made about yogurt, but I do not intend to drop it, it is
satisfying and rightly or wrongly, I have been raised to believe that
it is good for the skin and hair as well digestion.

See
http://www.lowcarbluxury.com/yogurt.html for some of the controversy.

lthy (not ODing with too many supplements) cure for this
hair loss?

I want to lose weight, but not the hair.

Please help me!!!
Jen

Jen I posted this in another post but here's my experience with hair
loss

There's been some more health issues with me. About 6 months ago I
started noticing that I was having trouble breathing. I talked to my
doctor about it and she agreed that I was having symptoms consistent
with asthma. She offered to put me on an inhaler but I'm allergic to
epinephrine so she put me on Singulair instead. it took about 10 days
to get enough into my body that I was finally having a much easier
time breathing, in the mean time I read up on it and adults do get the
onset of asthma, mostly women because it's hormone related. well then
my urine changed color and I kept thinking that it would go away. It
didn't. Then my hair started falling out. Not drastic but enough that
I cut my hair, it just hits my shoulders now. Then I called my doctor
and asked her if these symptoms were a problem, she told me to stop
the singulair right away. well my urine never changed back after a
month so I had her run some tests, the blood work came back with a
dangerously high level of iron in my blood, so she ran a ferretine
test. In the mean time I started reading about iron overload. Which is
dangerous. The most interesting thing I found out was what causes iron
deficiency, and how they treat it. When someone is anemic they are
instructed to take massive doses of vitamin C because vitamin C causes
you to absorb iron at a very high rate. Oh ****! I take a one-a-day
and supplement it with extra vitamin C. It turns out that I was
causing my body to overload iron. Guess what two of the symptoms of
iron overload is.... hair loss and asthma.

my internist told me that this low carb diet has all the vitamin C I
need because there is vitamin C in most foods and the more this diet
allows of red meat and so forth, the more vitamin C I'm getting from
sources most people don't know exist. i.e. steak, chicken, nuts,
spinach etc. so supplementing vitamin C in the presence of high iron
intake was dangerous. She told me to follow my diet without any
supplements and she'll draw my blood once a month for the next few
months and she believes all will be well.

I guess the point I'm trying to make is that low carb is a balanced
diet. By the way... my cholesterol, triglycerides and blood glucose
levels are still outstanding. and my iron levels have returned to
normal. I'm still having trouble breathing, but I am starting to have
hormone changes, and I think the hair loss has slowed to normal.

We have a BARF distributor here but we buy the raw food from the
regular store, it's gross sometimes but it's not so hard to do it.
Molly's breath is wonderful and her teeth have never looked this
white. Maggie has stopped scratching and her teeth are very white now.
They eat twice a day and get a pork neck bone, or pig foot every other
day. It took 9 weeks to change them over to raw food, as an abrupt
change causes nausea.

Thanks for the information Patti, very helpful. I too have lost lots of
hair, but unfortunately for other reasons.
I always did wonder if maybe I should be supplementing with more Vitamin C.
My question to you though is, what the heck is a BARF distributor??
Thanks,
Monica

Or Bones and Raw Food. My dog has been on a BARF diet for years. His
teeth have never had a speck of tarter, his coat is so shiny you need
sunglasses to look at him, and he hasn't had an allergic reaction to
anything since we took him off commercial dog food.
