Default HELP - Atkins & Hair Loss

Hey everyone
A month ago, I told you guys how scared I was about starting to lose my hair on
Atkins, and that I was going off of it, and onto low-calorie. I started
low-calorie - and my hair replenished, but I didn't lose any weight - just
maintained. I got back to college, and my friend Beth, who I hadn't seen in 4
months, came up to me GUSHING about how great I looked & how much weight I
lost. Two other friends said the same thing in the next days later. :]

I figured I couldn't just give up on Atkins, on my goal... so I went back on.
I'm taking a One-A-Day Carb Smart multivitamin, and am on Induction (for best
results). I get no Essential Fatty Acids b/c I don't eat fish & aren't taking
Omega-3.

I've noticed my hair is getting thinner again - from the thickness it used to
be. I want to stop this, if not reverse it, and don't know how.

Somebody recommended taking a 1000 mg (or was it mcg?) pill of Biotin every
day, in addition to my multivitamin, which already contains 450 mcg of Biotin.
Would this be too much Biotin in addition to my multivitamin? Does anyone know
a successful and healthy (not ODing with too many supplements) cure for this
hair loss?

I want to lose weight, but not the hair.

Please help me!!!

I think it's all in your mind. Aside from seeing bald spots, and counting
them all, how can you really know?

There's hair all over the place. It comes out in thick clumps in the shower.
When I blowdry my hair, it gets all over the sink. It's disgusting. It shows
up well on my navy carpet, too.

lol, Carmen - I know you've told me time and time again, but the thing is, when
I went on low-cal, my hair thickened up again. It's being depleted of
nutrients on Atkins that does it.

I guess I'll try Biotin, and if that doesn't work, specialized Hair Nutrients.
I'd like to hear everyone else's 2¢, tho

Have you gone to a doctor about this problem? It could be something
completely unrelated to diet.

If you are suffering from a lack of nutrients, you most likely are not
following the Atkins plan. Maybe an Atkins 'like' plan, but there is no
shortage of nutrients in Dr. Atkins plan as written.

This is a direct quote from your post: '

"I get no Essential Fatty Acids b/c I don't eat fish & aren't taking

You are not on the Atkins plan, which includes fish and healthy fatty acids.
Your post is typical of those who do their own made-up version of low-carb,
then
blame Atkins (or Eades or Heller ...) when it doesn't work right. You
ignore the advice of experienced posters such as Carmen who provide factual
information.

Those of us who truly follow the Atkins plan find that our hair is shinier,
thicker and healthier in the log run; I know mine is. How can you blame hair
loss on switching from Big Macs, ice cream, cake, cookies and spaghetti to
eating plenty of vegetables, meat, poultry, fish, nuts and berries along
with essential nutrient supplements? It's not the plan that is afoul, it's
your not following the plan appropriately that is the problem.

The same thing happened to me when I first started low carbing, but it
was because I wasn't doing it right. I was still trying to eat low fat
at the same time as low carb and it had some bad effects. When I
deliberately included a lot of healthy (olive) oil and fish (omega3)
into my diet, my hair got better than ever before. I also drink wine
with meals, but had stopped doing that when I first started.
Reintroducing the wine (red) may also have had some beneficial effect,
I did that at the same time that I added fats to the diet. My skin
improved as well.

I don't do extreme low carb, I eat sufficient carbs from nutritious
sources to keep my energy levels high enough for my daily gym workouts,
but absolutely no unnecessary carbs. I try to cut trans and saturated
fats, but don't do low fat in any other respect. I had more energy when
I first started, while I still had a lot of weight to lose, but had to
increase carbs as my weight dropped to keep my energy levels high. My
hair and skin are in better shape now than they were when I was
overweight. Except for some loose skin where I have lost the most
weight, but that is slowly lessening with good diet and daily exercise.

The only other thing that I do, that many seem to be wary of, is eat a
lot of yogurt throughout the day. Sugar free flavored yogurt. I don't
know if it is a good or a bad thing, there are some very contradictory
claims made about yogurt, but I do not intend to drop it, it is
satisfying and rightly or wrongly, I have been raised to believe that
it is good for the skin and hair as well digestion.

See
http://www.lowcarbluxury.com/yogurt.html for some of the controversy.
