Splenda and Maltodextrin?
Greetings:
What's the theory on Splenda? They claim it's carb free, but it's stuffed full of maltodextrin as a filler, which is almost as bad as straight glucose from what I can tell. Thoughts? -- Peace, Pen -- Pawbreakers - The Candy for Cats! http://www.pawbreakers.com |

Any carb is as bad as a glucose carb, but in a packet or teaspooon of Splenda there is less than one carb. I don' recall exactly how much. The law states that if it is less than .5gm carbs it can be called zero carbs! Of course we know they say 'The law is an ass!' That's very expensive. Surely there must be a cheaper source for sucralose.

Splenda and Maltodextrin?
Chad C. burbled across the ether:
That's very expensive. Surely there must be a cheaper source for sucralose. "you only need 1 drop to equal the sweetness of approximately 1.5 teaspoons of sugar. Or, 1/4 teaspoon to equal the sweetness of 1 cup of sugar. 1 ounce : $16.00 ( 24 cups sugar equivalent) 2 ounces : $30.00 ( 48 cups sugar equivalent) 4 ounces : $58:00 ( 96 cups sugar equivalent)" One 3.8 oz box of splenda is 3.50, for the equivilent sweetening power of four cups. (I got this by back-calculating -- 24g per cup, so 48 tsp at .5 per, divided by stated # of tsp servings --200. 200/48=4.16) Splenda granualar 3.8 oz box, 4.16 / 3.50 = $1.18 per cup Sweetzfree 1 liquid oz, 24 (equivilent sweetening cups) / $16.00 = $1.5 per cup Sweetzfree 2 liquid oz, 48 (equivilent sweetening cups) /30 = $1.6 per cup Sweetzfree 4 liquid oz, 96(equivilent sweetening cups) /58= $1.65 per cup A 40 cent to 55 cent increase in the cost per cup for the privilege of removing the maltodextrin which not only has carbs but tastes bad to some is well worth it for many. For comparison, DaVinci's vanilla (there is no non-flavored syrup) is $8.95 (lowest price) per 25.4 fluid ounces, or 3.17 cups-- price $2.82 per cup. Much more reasonable than it has any right to be. -- revek www.geocities.com/tanirevek/LowCarb.html lowcarbing since June 2002 5'2" 41 F 165+/too much/size seven petite please "... the garment is named after (Bikini Atoll) on the basis that a woman wearing a bikini would have the same effect on a man as an H-bomb: He would fall to the ground screaming and clutching his melted eyes before bursting into flames and being smashed by overpressure. Not entirely clear why this was supposed to be a good thing." - James Nicoll |
