Hello and FYI info on a new lc newsletter premier Monday
Hi folks!
This is Julie Westly again (waving at Tina and others I know here) ....just thought I'd share if any of you aren't aware. I am unveiling my Low Carb RESOURCE Newsletter tomorrow. I'll add the post I did up for some groups that had questions, if anyone is interested. It's HUGE, and I hope it will be a valuable resource to some of you. We have subscribers submit their favorite recipes (and STRESS they give credit to the authors/creators/websites)...I noticed a couple fav. recipes sent in were from here ...so I wanted to let you know I DID include the alt.support.diet.low-carb credit as well as the creator and I think after tomorrow you'll be seeing a huge JUMP in membership here because of it! Hope to help spread the word about your great forum! Also note, we do a featured "Low Carb Group/Forum of the Month" if you'd like THIS one featured, please LET ME KNOW!!....there are loads of people out there that don't know about this forum, let's spread the word!! Here is the info post I sent to my lists and those who emailed me to ask: I've had some emails about my newsletter coming out Monday, so I decided to post this response I gave to several people to my groups also if anyone is interested. It explains in detail. ************************************************ The GREAT NEWS IS...it's FREE! Low Carb RESOURCE Newsletter for the time being is located at yahoo groups. Here is the url: http://tinyurl.com/nbid It's set as a public group, (non posting, only the newsletter will be posted) so people don't "need" a yahoo ID to access the newsletter or subscribe to read from the web. They DO need to get an ID to subscribe. As you know, yahoo ID's are free by going to www.yahoo.com and registering. Only subscribers however can enter our monthly FREE Giveway Contests. Each month we have a "Product of the Month Review"....this month is a super LC Cookbook! Then, by entering the contest, one lucky subscriber will win a FREE AUTOGRAPHED copy of that cookbook. It will be that way each month, what ever our product review is for the month, subscribers get to enter our contest for a chance to win one, free. Also, the "files" are not accessible to anyone who isn't subscribed. (This is a yahoo rule, not ours) We have a feature called "In The Files" each month where we are providing our subscribers with some GREAT resource material. What we have planned this month is a "secret" until the newsletter comes out on Monday! (Don't you just LOVE secrets? I do!).... Low Carb RESOURCE Newsletter is FREE to anyone who would like to read it. It comes out the LAST Monday of each month. This Monday, is our premier edition! It's HUGE! We have been working on it all month, and I think we should have called it an EMagazine instead of a newsletter because my word doc is telling me we have 45 PAGES!! ..about 250K!! (We warned subscribers, we had a lot to say!) We have several regular feature columns that will appear in each newsletter....I'll run over them for you: Topic of the Month: Each month an in depth research on a topic of interest to low carbers. The Sept. issue we are tackling the dreaded "Artificial Sweeteners". Elisa H, my co-editor is in charge of this column. She has researched low carb as a "hobby" and passion for the last five years. She did the MOST comprehensive "all in one place" story I have EVER read on artificial sweeteners! It's JUST AWESOME! In Our Humble Opinion: This is co-editor Elisa's and my personal comments, experiences and opinions on each month's topic of the month....first her views, then my own. Low Carb Product Review: Each month I will be reviewing a different low carb product of interest to our readers. I just spent a couple of weeks testing recipes from the cookbook I reviewed for Monday's edition, and it's a "keeper"! I test personally ALL products I review, so authors and retailers better be SURE they are confindent in their products! I do honest reviews, based on my own experiences w/the product and how my non low carb family likes them too! Monthly FREE CONTEST GIVEAWAY: Each month, whatever product I review will be given away FREE to one lucky subscriber. They only are asked if they would please, to send in "their" own review (doesn't have to be as long as mine) for their fellow subscribers to read by the next newsletter. (Instructions on how to enter, rules etc. are in the newsletter each month). Like I mentioned, only subscribers can win this contest. Low Carb Hints and Tips: This is self explanatory but we hope to bring a few things to light (and the "why's") in a way our readers will be sure to gain even more "knowledge" from every issue...knowledge is power! Low Carb Online Support Group/Forum of the Month: Each month we will feature a different support group or forum. We do a short bio on the owner and tell a bit about the group, it's features and location on the Internet. Folks can submit their favorites too! (but they need to get group owner approval to do so). Elisa and I both feel that online peer support was and is a KEY for us. We want to encourage readers to find that too. Low Carb PERSONAL Website of the Month: Each month we will feature a different low carber's personal (low carb) website. There are so many awesome ones out there! This can not be a retail site, (if they have affiliates that's ok, but not selling "their" products or a store type site). You can tell a true blue low carber by their websites. We want to start sharing those stories and sites with our readers. Low Carb IN THE News: We will bring to our readers the latest news and/or studies out about low carb living or things of interest to low carbers in general. This will vary between news articles recently published to studies recently released. Low Carb SUCCESS STORIES: Our readers are encouraged to send in THEIR stories to share LOW CARB WORKS! Whether for health OR weight loss, we'll be spreading the news! From OUR Readers: We'll be printing a few of the AWESOME emails we get from our readers. We have so many already just in anticipation of this "one of a kind" newsletter, and it's not even out yet! In The Files: As I mentioned earlier, we have some "special extra's" planned each month just for subscribers. Only subscribers can access our files section, and this featured "extra". THAT'S NOT ALL!!......then on to the second part of Low Carb RESOURCE Newsletter!...The RECIPES!! Each month we will have a featured "flavor or ingredient"......readers know ahead of time and send in recipes. Ones they have developed, tried and like, adapted to low carb, or found that just plain look great! The September issue's featured flavor is LEMON!! We had 34 recipes sent in by our readers! They are in categories like Main, Sides, Salads, Desserts, Breads, Beverages, Condiments. ALL ARE in MasterCook format with carb counts! All of this is what you can expect each month from Low Carb RESOURCE Newsletter. You can subscribe on the website: http://tinyurl.com/nbid by clicking "join this group". The website is also how to choose your mailing option. You can choose to get "individual email"..."digest"...or "no mail/web only" (which is read from the main site). This is also how you unsub, by going there and click "leave this group". My husband is busy building www.lowcarbresource.com and eventually the HTML version of the newsletter will be there, with TONS of other exciting things. Right now, you can only access the subscription from the yahoo groups and the link I sent. The website (lowcarbresource.com) will be "in addition to" not instead of, when it is built. That should be in the next 6-12 months, and will be announced for anyone interested in the fancy HTML version of Low Carb RESOURCE Newsletter. This is like NO OTHER Newsletter out there. We are very proud of it and know our readers will be amazed at this FREE information resource. Look forward to seeing you there! Thanks for asking! I think I answered all your questions! Feel free to share this with any of your groups. Now that I think of it, I should probably post it to some of mine! Did everyone see today's newsletter? What did you think of it? Were I really don't like the use of tinyurl for all the links. If tinyurl were to fold, everything would become unfindable. If you're going to use tinyurl, I suggest you add the real links as well. I never heard of Belinda Schweinhart before, but it seems a bit overstated to call her a "pioneer" of low carb cookbooks in 1999 when Alex Haas, Fran McCullough, and Atkins had cookbooks out in 1994 to 1997. (Atkins' cookcooks, IMO, are utter crap. Haas' and McCullough's cookbooks have gotten lots of rave reviews over the years.) I found it a little odd that after the many plugs for Belinda's book in part one, not one of her recipes was found in the recipe section. Rather too much shameless commercial plugging in the newsletter on the whole for my taste, but a plug for Synergy-Ripoff is a big black mark in my book. They are known for a great deal of complaints about service, grossly overpriced "exclusive" products, and falsified carb counts on the "exclusive" products. -- jamie ) "There's a seeker born every minute." |

Hello and FYI info on a new lc newsletter premier Monday
Hi Jamie,
Thanks for the feedback! The problem with some of the links is that they became broken being so long, when we test ran the newsletter. This is why we chose to use tinyurl, which is very popular, to stop that problem. Many people don't know what to do with a link that comes through broken (aka paste the rest of it to the address bar). I'll let the other editors know about your suggestion. We did keep the shorter links original and not use the tinyurl. Belinda is not only a well known cookbook author (and yes, one of the pioneers) but she also has her own line of low carb food items "from Belinda's Kitchen" of which the Atkins site buys directly from her (that's not easy to do, sell right to Atkins). I'm surprised you've not heard of her, she is also a writer for CarbHealth Magazine and is just opening her first low carb store in her city. She has recipes on several websites, including her own free (and we gave the url to her site. The recipe digest was ingredient "specific" as it is each month (that was explained). September recipes were "lemon". I don't recall Belinda having any lemon recipes in her cookbooks (I have both of them), but I'll surely check. What a strange observation. I know Fran and Alex were also author's of low carb cookbooks early on, that is why I said "one of". I know many of the cookbook authors and well know writers, website owners myself. There were VERY few low carb cookbooks prior to the last few years. Let alone any that have made it into a third revision, so I felt the title was well deserved, as her cookbooks have stood the test of time. I'd LOVE to review Fran's cookbooks also. I've got quite a list of authors and product developers who have contacted me to review their products. Unfortunately, I only do one a month, there is just not enough space for more, with all the other content. The majority being the "Topic of the Month" indepth research and the whole digest of recipes. I do very honest reviews with the cookbooks. I test MANY of the recipes, not only on myself, but how my family likes them too. I am too busy to be a short order cook, they need to be happy with what I eat. Like in ALL newsletters, magazines, any media really, there has to be sponsors. There was the cookbook review, and Belinda's business ad, not sure what "many" plugs you're talking about. This is how newsletters are free to the public, by having sponsors. Nothing new, Dana Carpender, Lora Ruffner, the list goes on and on...they all must do this... it's how it's done... One thing we pride ourselves on however was that of 42 pages (that is what my word doc said), barely one page was sponsors. That's not even the fraction of the norm for such a publication. Likewise, it answers that daily questions for new people "Where can I get low carb products". I'm sorry your opinion of Synergy Diet was as glowing as the one for the newsletter, but then if we all felt alike, it would be a boring world, wouldn't it. I had hoped it would be well received and so far, the response has been AMAZING. This is the first negative review I've seen. My mail is flooded with wonderful email raves not only to the content, but the size overall being unlike any other. It's foolish of us to believe "everyone" would love it. We do respect your honesty and your personal perception of our work, always. I really do appreciate your input , it is a new venture for both Elisa and I, as well as everyone who helped. We knew we would have some kinks to work out. You gave me some ideas to make it even better. I thank you for that.
