Default shopping for short people...

I'm very frustrated. I left the house yesterday with the intent of buying
new clothes. My pants are literally falling off of me... When they first
got a little loose, it was cool. But now I look like I do-dooed my pants!!!
Not very flattering. Went to Old Navy - good sale right now. Tried on 8
different pairs of pants. Size 4 fits great, except even the "short" pants
were too long. I hate this. I need new pants! And there were only a
handful of "short" pants, so the selection sucked.

Where do shorties go to shop?

I did well in a shop for "petites" meaning shorter people, not thinner
ones. The one here is called "Laura Petites".

You and me BOTH!!

So frustrating...I hate clothes shopping because the majority of pants that FIT
nicely are always too short. I end up wearing nothing but my Levi's because at
least I can get them in the right length and they fit me pretty good. Or yoga
pants, they seem to run long.

Try online shopping, or if you don't sew, you could try a tailor/seamstress
to hem up your pants.

I have the same problem. When I am buying clothes for work, I go to the
petite sophisticate or Talbot's. Both are pricey but last forever. When I
buy trendy clothes for casual wear, you will find me at Old Navy. I have
long legs so the regulars usually work for me. In the winter, I wear boots
with a short heel with my jeans. My bigger problem is getting the waist and
hips of dresses and blouses to be where I need them to be!

For work clothes - try petite sophisticate (which has identical
clothing as casual corner, but in petites and usually a bit higher $..
go figure rolls eyes) Or try the petite section of department
stores.

For trendy or casual clothes, well, I haven't found it yet. Liz
makes a good line of petite clothing, but in my eyes, its more
business wear than casual wear. And the casual wear is more oldlady
wear than younger, trendy wear.

I know how frustrating it is, I went through the same thing a few
weeks back when I went shopping. And for those who say "just hem
it"... its not always that easy. Pants have certain cuts, the only
hemmed pants that look good are straight leg cut pants. Tapered leg,
or boot leg, or flared leg - you can't hem them without destroying the
look. Oh, and mind you - do you know how hideous a pair of hemmed
jeans look?

Its a real pain in the ass.

Oh - and another thing -about sizing. BF needed some new dress pants
and found some on sale at a local department store. So he wears a
size 31 w. 32 l. Do they have any of those in stock? Noooo. So we
are trying on different varieties and find that even in mens pants the
sizing is so off its not funny. Even within the same maker/style
pants the sizing was inconsistent. He tried on about 5 or 6 pairs to
settle on 2. The 32/32 were a bit long. the 30/32 were short but fit
in the waist. the 33/32 fit in length and waist, but were baggy in
the butt. On, and the 2nd pair of 32/32 he tried on didn't fit at
all. Its almost as if the manufacturers sell the irregulars as
regulars.

I hem jeans all the time for myself and the granddaughers. You probably
can't tell which ones I've hemmed and which ones have the original hems.
One trick is to use the jeans thread found at your local fabric store and
have a machine capable of sewing through layers of denim material. Just
cut off the original hem, turn under and sew..... The worst part is getting
the hem turned under and pressed before actually sewing them.

For dress pants I usually take them to a local seamtress as I don't like
messing with the linings and blind hems.

My husband has to buy what fits and take the pants to the cleaners to have them
hemmed.
I would hem them .. but he is to picky. This saves us both time, frustration
and mutual annoyance.

I'm too short for petite pants, so I take them to a tailor to have them
hemmed. No choice.

Original poster:

Shop in the petite section of large department stores, or at stores with
"petite" in the name. Liz Claiborne has some dockers-style pants that are
actually short enough to not hem. They're the only ones I've found in
years. I'm almost 5'1".

I've also known short adults who shop in the children's sections.
