Default What is wrong with my diet?

I have been an on and off dieter for many years. I have lost a total of 20 kilos in all and am just now trying to lose the final 5.

My diet goes something like this:

Breakfast: 2 eggs poached or scrambled occassionally with 1 slice of low-cal wholemeal bread

Lunch: Tin of tomato flavoured tuna with a small tub of tabouli

Snack: Another tin of tuna

Dinner: Some sort of meat or poultry (fish, steak or grilled chicken) with veges or green salad

I go to the gym 5 days a week for an hour and a half combining weights and cardio in the mid-morning. Usually I walk 5km on the treadmill, 20 mins on the cross trainer and half an hour of weights.

I have been doing this for 3 weeks and have lost half a kilo. Is there any reason for the slow weight loss? It is disheartening. Can anyone see anything wrong with this diet?

This seems like an approach that would lead to weight loss, but I
think we need more information in order to offer suggestions.

How much do you weigh now? (A diet that's effective for someone who
weighs 105 kilos and is trying to get to 100 might not work too well
for someone who weighs 60 and is trying to get to 55. And vice
versa.)

Are you male or female? Roughly how old?

Is this the diet you followed while losing 20 kilos?

Can you provide a little more information on quantities of some of the
food, like the tabouli and the meat or poultry with dinner? Any idea
how many calories you're consuming in a day? (There's a free web site
that will help you figure this out -- www.fitday.com.) If you're
small, it's possible that you're eating too many calories to lose very
quickly. If you're larger, perhaps you aren't eating enough to keep
your metabolism going effectively.

That's a lot of exercise, but how vigorous is it? It might be that
you'd get better results with less time and more intensity -- heavier
weights, some sprints on the treadmill, or whatever.

I will agree with Chris that there are many variables here with too
little info to go on. One thing that pops out at me tho about your food
choices is that they are limited. Eat the same old thing, get the same
old results or not. Is the tuna packed in water? The ones in oil have
lots of calories. Eggs? Ditch the 2 whole ones(saturated fat and only
12grams of protein) for about five egg whites (no fat and about 20grams
of protein - sprinkle some fatfree cheese & some chopped up veggies for
a good omelot). A cup of oatmeal in the morning would be a nice change
of pace(cinnimon etc for variety) Add in some lowfat dairy (yogurt,
cottage cheese) and even more green/colorful vegetables, with some
fruits. Vegetables and fruits contain the fiber you need to mobilize
fatloss. And what do you drink all day? Water is always your best
choice. Do the FitDay tracking as suggested too. it may open your eyes
and also show you what possibilities you could have in menu planning.
Anyone can 'diet' the weight off, but making a lifestyle change to keep
it off is the cruncher.

Maybe for you, but others have the right to choose the method that works
best for them and their physiology.

research on latest findings and they indicate the healthy dietary fats
are good for you.

You can get the healthy dietary fats from fish, flax seed, etc and still
enjoy the low fat/fat free versions of many products. Following a low fat
diet doesn't mean you ignore the healthy fats.

And no one said they weren't. Some people just prefer to cut back on fat
overall and shouldn't be put down for their choices. Personally if I were
to eat a lot of fat, healthy or otherwise, I'd end up in the hospital again.
So just as you make people aware of your health problems that prevent you
from eating carbs, I thought I would just do the same and mention that there
are physiological problems for some people when it comes to eating fat
(good fat or otherwise).

On my lower fat diet I still enjoy salmon, small amounts of oil, a few nuts
here and there, etc. I simply use caution and moderation.

I'm getting really tired of the low fat dieters being belittled in this
group. Personally I could give a rats ass about the research since it's
normally biased and will be replaced by another study down the line that
will refute it - do remember that most studies have a less than 40% chance
of being correct. I still intend to listen to the advice of my personal
physician and my own personal experience. I also intend to share my
experiences here because it might just help someone who feels like they
would otherwise have no voice in this group because of all of the attempts
to make this another ASDLC.

I dunno. Fat free dairy is pretty widely recommended except in the
low-carb crowd. Anyway, it has worked pretty well for me. I'm eating
a bowl of f/f Greek yogurt even as I type this.
