The went-to-a-con, fell-off-the-wagon-hard diet.
I got to be a panelist at a local SF convention this weekend (Orycon,
in Portland, Ore.) I didn't pack my own food, figuring I'd wing it. Oh, I wung it, all right. Yeesh. The hospitality suite (free snackies/meals for con members) was a cavalcade of carbs. Lots of choices, none protein related -- bagels, chips, fruit, cereal at breakfast, donuts all day. The occasional cold cuts or hot meal was set on as if by locusts and disappeared quickly, so one's timing had to be right. I did happen upon the tail end of some beef -vegetable soup at one point, with scant "beef" by the time I got there. Being a panel participant, I got to visit the green room, which was nicely outfitted with muffins, banana bread, coffee/tea, beer and wine, and more fruit. Still, no protein. I gave in to circumstance. I ate small bits of bagels and a third of maple bar. I had an excellent cranberry-chocolate chip muffin. I tried at first to stick to vodka-and-soda during visits to the bar but by Sunday I gave in to a sugar-laden hot chocolate with Bailey's bought for me by someone else ... and ate mini-Snickers and oatmeal cookies in a pal's hotel room. I had a Reuben sandwich in the hotel coffee shop, which I sent back when I took a bite and found that there was *no* meat inside at all (which led to me getting a plate piled with pastrami to add to my sandwich ... and my biggest protein meal of the whole weekend.) And then there were the mystery beverages at the room parties Saturday night. And the cheap microbrews on tap in hospitality. Not enough water. Not NEARLY enough water. The upside: I walked and walked and walked all over the hotel from Friday afternoon to Sunday afternoon. LOTS of walking. And my panels went really well and I got to flirt with lots of geekboys (which has nothing to do with my diet but was fun nonethless, especially considering that -- thanks to LC living -- I weigh fifty pounds less than I did when I went to the con last year. *g*) The upshot on the scale this morning -- up two pounds. Yes, I feel pretty crappy, but the damage was minimal. And temporary. Today ... eggs, tuna, broccoli, and lots and lots of water. Back on the horse. Again. Ah....you needed a break....got your leptin kicked up, your glycogen
refilled, and now you'll speed your loss since you can workout harder. At least, that's what happened to me that this weekend (technical review in Chicago) Dawn Taylor wrote: :: I got to be a panelist at a local SF convention this weekend (Orycon, :: in Portland, Ore.) The went-to-a-con, fell-off-the-wagon-hard diet.
Don't beat yourself up too much. Last weekend I travelled south to Florida to attend my nieces wedding. Although I stayed away from the high carb food and tried to keep LC, the booze got to me. Then on Tuesday it was off to San Diego on business - tried to keep LC even on the flight out. Had a steak & veggies for dinner - so far so good. Breakfast started out good - eggs & sausage but then I added a small cup of yogurt - helps keep my stomach on track while travelling. Lunch worked out okay with a nice salad - so far only a little cheating. But then I took a side trip to Vegas. Dinner was my first cheat - had some steamed buns and rice with dinner in a Chinese Restaurant. Went to the buffet for breakfast - was good to a point - had an omelet, smoked salmon, sausage. Then a bowl of oatmeal and a piece of Key Lime Pie. Had to bulk up for the day!! Skipped lunch - too busy gambling. Went to a Japanese buffet for dinner. Forget it - sushi, udon noodles and dessert. Okay - I had diet soda to drink. Then I walked and walked. Next day I had a banana before going to airport and ate the plane food - a burger with the bun, doritos and a bit of chocolate. Saturday I had my nephews bar-mitzvah - kind of tough to eat caviar without a cracker - had a few of those. Then the martinis - chocolate and sour apple. Last night we went to dinner in a British Pub and I ordered fish & chips. Okay, I left 4 "chips" on my plate. Today, I am LCing again. I don't know what my weight is and I will not beat myself up over this. I'll be good all week and get on the scale on Friday. Friday night I take the boy scouts on an outing at Assateague Island - a backpacking trip. I will be doing heavey duty carbs - trail mix and dehydrated foods. I figure I will need both strength & stamina - I'll be carrying a 45 pound pack- 12 mile hike. Trying hard and will get back to the LC WOE after the weekend. Holidays are not a problem for me... Dawn You should go to DragonCon sometime, it's all high carb stuff too, but the lines in the consuite are so long that sometimes I just gave up even though I was hungry, and the portions they let you have are tiny, and if you want seconds you have to get back in the line. With that and all the walking I actually _lost_ weight at Dragoncon. Next time I'm bringing my own food, some cheese cubes and stuff. -- -Michelle Levin (Luna) http://www.mindspring.com/~lunachick http://www.mindspring.com/~designbyluna |

I remember your post about it -- in fact, when I was posting my first message in this thread, I remember thinking, "Luna will no exactly what I'm talking about!" Dawn |

(Massive snippage) You came to San Diego!? Ya know, you could have given us SD low carbers a head's up. I know a lot of local places you could have avoided the high carb crap. Next time, give us a head's up, we'll be happy to help. Heck, I could have even told you which casinos are really good for low carb!
