Default New low!

I didn't exercise all weekend.

This morning on the scale I weigh 225 pounds!

I finally dropped below the plateau I've been hanging at for about 2 weeks.

That's a 3 pound (+/-) drop from the last weigh-in.

Finally, it's rained all weekend and it's a rainy Monday so I've re-duct-
taped my 30-year-old golf umbrella and will be out on the multi-use trail
later. I wonder if the drop in atmospheric pressure (on the scale) might
explain the dramatic difference.

Breakfast: 1-1/2 cups Trader Joe's un-sweetened mini shredded wheats with a
cup of Carnation evaporated fat-free milk.

I don't want to discourage you but single measurements of weight
are unreliable indications of change. What you should do is
weigh yourself at roughly the same time each day and average the
results over several days. There is some argument as to the
number of values to use but one or two weeks is probably a
minumum for significant values. Incidentally, if you record your
your weighings, spreadsheets like Excel will do what you want.
It's called a moving average and you can even draw a graph and
also decide if a change means anything statistically.

A personal observation is that every time I eat Chinese food my
weight goes up by a pound or two for several days. It's almost
certainly water retention.

Looks as if those walks are paying off in weight loss!

I'm really sick and tired of all this rain. It rained every day last
week and there is more of the same forecasted for this week. It's
really tough to hold an umbrella while cyclingg

Dr Atkins defined a stall as 4+ weeks without a new low and
a plateau as longer. Doesn't matter if you're on his plan, the
definition remains usefull - It tells what is and isn't realistic
when it comes to expectations. Expect a new low in a
shorter time period than a month and your expectations are
not realistic. Needless to say no one ever likes this definition,
but disliking it doesn't make it wrong.

I don't want to discourage you but single measurements of weight
are unreliable indications of change.

Caveat - Except new lows. A new low shows loss no matter
that water bounces above it don't show gain.

Absolutely. Data smoothing, running averages, whatever
term you use for them, they give a better view of what's really
happening than today's snapshot. Today's snapshot includes
water. You may not have noticed but water registers on the
scale yet it isn't fat. It makes what the scale says include
noise. But it's SO tempting to figure that what the scale says
is how much fat you have (and hence my not noticing comment).

Doug,

I only weigh in once a week (but I'll do a day weigh-in on occasion).
Always after waking up and dehydrated and after the morning **** (seldom
used in the correct context anymore!).

I went and looked over my numbers and for the entire month of May I've
been under my daily fats and sodium and cholesterol allowances every day.
That's two weeks. My sugar has been below the daily allowance but higher
than usual, due to my TJ's mini shredded wheats with evaporated fat-free
milk breakfast.

I think we are saying much the same thing but there are
circumstances like having gastric flu that produce temporary low
readings [ :-) ] and my weight soon returns to normal.

I'm a canadian, from the east, grew up in the snow, getting up early to dig
out the car (litterally) from under a snowbank, sliding around, being snowed
in at school and having to sleep there.

I'm now in nothern California, where it rained for MONTHS

Snow is better... by far ! I never thought in my life that I would say such
thing.... Snow is better than rain.. you can get out in the snow.. do
stuff... You're not bogged down in mud all the time!

Not heavy, wet snow mixed with rain that does nothing but create more mud
and make things slippery, especially when trying to conduct a track meet.
Oh, and my location in Wisconsin is actually farther north than parts of
Canada so I get the whole snow thing since we get loads of it.

I don't want to hear anymore dirty four letter wordsg Snow would really
cause me to go off the deep-end !!

At least the rain today has been very spotty. It was dry at work and my
house but I drove through some major downpours on the commute home tonight.

I'm hoping it doesn't rain Friday morning. It's bike-to-work week and the
MetroPark is holding a breakfast at their market downtown. They've asked
the bike patrol to participate. A few of us are meeting at 7:00am and
riding downtown. Afterward I'm heading out for the regularly scheduled ride
with the cycling club. Maybe I can make up for some of the lost time of the
bike this past week.
