Panic attack from too much sugar?
Has anybody ever had a panic attack from eating too much sugar? Or did I
just have a one-time-doug-only thing happen? Last week, after being completely off any diet for about a week and eating lots of carbs and sugars of all kinds I had, for the first time in my life, what can only be called a real, severe panic attack. I got into a really strange mental state, couldn't sleep, was stressed and panicky and didn't know what to do. The next day all day was much the same thing. I went back on strict low-carbs - less than 20 gm a day - and the next day was feeling a bit better. The day after that a bit more better, and so on. Today I am feeling basically ok, five days after going back on strict low-carbs. And I've dropped 3 kg in the previous four days also. I've gotten depressed and in bad moods after eating sugar before, so I know it has weird effects on me. But I never had a complete and thorough panic attack like that before in my life. Has anybody else ever experienced something like that? doug |

kids get sugar highs all the time....if you had been LCing, and then decided
to take a real sugar hit, then you might have just came on a big sugar high. Also, since you were off LC prior to the big sugar load, you might be diabetic or leaning that way. Do you 'net reading on panic attacks.... "Doug Lerner" wrote in message ... Has anybody ever had a panic attack from eating too much sugar? Or did I just have a one-time-doug-only thing happen? Has anybody else ever experienced something like that? Look here for definitions of different meanings of 'hypoglycemia': http://www.hypoglycemia.asn.au/artic...t_is_hypo.html Something like that can happen when the blood sugar abruptly falls, as after a 'spike'. Search for 'hypo' and 'adrenalin' and 'panic'. Might be a good idea to get a check for possible early diabetes, and get a monitor (cheap, non-prescription) and see what your blood sugar is doing. Has anybody else ever experienced something like that? doug It could be related. If you think of food as being like a drug, any food that your body is not used to can shock your system. Panic attacks are complex. I never used to get them at all. Then one day my dad, tough old ex-marine, asked me to help finish painting his house. He was getting panic attacks from climbing up on a ladder. I went up the ladder and finished the paint job, but then I started suffering from the same thing so bad that if I watch a movie with a guy standing on a ledge I get dizzy. And I used to fly airplanes (still will, if the opportunity arises). Funny how the mind works, but I have little doubt that carb-loaded foods can affect your blood chemistry and therefore your mind. |

Sounds like you may benefit from some professional help and maybe meds. Well, I did have a complete blood workup just a week ago - and everything was normal, even blood sugar. I think I'm going to attribute this to over-carbing. After being back on rigorous under-20-carb regimine for 5 days I am feeling stable again. Who knows - maybe all the daily pressures I am under (work, family, health, weight, money, etc.) really were adding up and I'm about to have a nervous breakdown. But maybe it was just sugar. I have noticed in the past that sugar can put me in a bad mood for a couple of hours. Maybe it was something like this. But I never had a panic attack before, so I didn't know what to make of it. I think I was as panicked about the panic attack itself as I was about the things I was panicking about! And thanks for all the private emails I got too. doug |

One of my sons was triggered by an anti-histamine since taken of the market, and needed therapy and a couple of years to get over it. It can be really really scary. A proffesional can help figure out possible causes. -- JK Sinrod Sinrod Stained Glass Studios www.sinrodstudios.com Coney Island Memories www.sinrodstudios.com/coneymemories |
