Learned Something New About Insulin - Blood Pressure
I was skimming "The High Blood Pressure Solution" by Richard D. Moore
MD, PhD 2nd edition 2001. The following caught my eye. "..... Insulin is also one of the most potent sodium-retaining hormones...." The author goes on to remark that insulin stimulates the sodium-potassium pump. A twice normal blood level of insulin can cause almost total reabsorption of sodium from the prefiltrate? urine back into the blood inside the kidney. He adds that high insulin seems to be why obese people tend to retain sodium and frequently have high blood pressure. The thrust of the book was to strongly encourage diet, exercise, nutrition and weight loss as a means to control hypertension, with classical medication being adopted when these lifestyle changes aren't sufficient. He also commented that if you have been on a pretty restrictive calorie diet [he didn't discuss low carb at all], and then suddenly hit the cookies, the blood sugar excursion raises the insulin and leads to significant water retention. There are nice parts with good sounding physiological explanations towards the end, for those who like these sorts of details. Even some drawings, for the visually inclined. |

Learned Something New About Insulin - Blood Pressure
I've been wondering whether the biggie size falafel over high blood pressure
is real or not. Maybe it needs to be listed along with the myths of high cholesterol, too much fat in your diet, global warming being the fault of SUV's and incandescent light bulbs, and that second hand smoke causes cancer. I really don't know what to believe any more. -- Mike |

I guess science has become much like religion -- believing in the results of any particular study or group so studies requires a leap of faith. Who funded which study, what was used in terms of an experimental method, how was the data evaluated... All this crapola about global warming is the epitome of bad science, right next to the wonderful scientifically based dietary and nutrition advice cheerfully provided by the AHA, the ADA, et al. I just don't know what to believe anymore. I know this: my diabetes is gone and it took my high blood pressure along with it; most of my excess fat is gone and I am no longer being kicked out of the bed by the dog due to my flatulence. I thank Doctor A for all that! What about you? How do you decide which studies you do and do not buy? -- Mike P.S. I used to teach statistics and experimental design. |

I'll add to this a saying that I like a lot: "Figures don't lie, but liars can figure." I was in line at the pharmacy last night to pick up my wife's allergy Rx and there was a book titled something like "The Ultimate Diet for a Lifetime". I skimmed the sample meal plans and they were all at least 60% simple carbs like breads and cereal. sigh I started LCing and my glucose level dropped out of the pre-diabetes range within 6 weeks. My triglycerides dropped out of the danger zone as well. I'm into the LC mode for 3 months now, and have dropped over 30 lbs. All without starving myself or spending 100+ hours on a treadmill. I read Taubes' book and became more convinced that the medical community doesn't have a clear idea on how to combat Type 2 diabetes and obesity--other than throwing people onto medication or telling them to "eat less and exercise more." In my own personal study in which I am the only participant, I know that the LC lifestyle works for me. I'm losing weight and my overall health has improved. My doctor is pleased with my numbers--and has stopped talking about medicating me for diabetes. My study is all the proof I need that this way of eating works. Mark |

We soar through space and send TV cameras to distant planets. The power and storage capacity of desktop computing is nothing short of amazing. The Internet is almost brand new and look at what its already done to/for the world. All of this technology is based on sand and fire. We hardly know anything about the body and mind. There's nothing more significant than anecdotal evidence when the anecdote is you. Mike |
