Carbs in Yeast?
Fantastic! I wish I would have known about that site long ago.
Thanks large. At that site I discovered Sweet'n Lo has 89 carbs per 100g, Splenda has 90 carbs per 100g, and plain ol' granulated extra-bad-for-you SUGAR, has 100 carbs per 100g. Not a huge difference, but,...... This only helps a little, because these are weights. A cup of Splenda weighs a lot less than a cup of sugar. If you were going to make something that required a cup of sugar (100 carbs), how many carbs would be in the amount necessary for Sweet'n Lo or Splenda to give the same sweetness? mel On Apr 3, 4:26 pm, "Jeri" wrote: Mel wrote: How many carbs are in a packet of yeast? For Splenda granular, I believe it's 24 grams of carb per measured cup. -- AF "Non Sequitur U has a really, really lousy debate team." --artyw raises the bar on rec.sport.baseball |

Thanks, mel http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/search/ On Splenda, most of the 1 gram packets are filler (other sugars) and probably only 0.05 grams or less are actual Sucralose. The 1 gram packets are the equivalent of about 8 to 10 grams of regular sugar. If you are using the packet version of splenda, about 1 gram gives the equivalent sweetness to 10 grams of sugar. So, if you go by weight, then you can figure out the equivalents. You can probably also find the equivalents with a web search. The Splenda packet box tells you that 24 packets have the equivalent sweetness to 1 Cup of sugar. The boxes for most sweetners have equivalent tables of sweetness, or you can find them on the web. |

Carbs in Yeast?
Jim,
What I am after is the actual carb count for recipe-sized quantities. If I want to make some "Jello" with Knox gelatin, unsweetened Kool- aid, and the proper amount of sweetener, I need to know how many carbs would be in an amount of Sweet'n Lo that would give the same sweetness as, say, a cup of granulated sugar. One solution is to just use liquid Sweet'n Lo,... it has no carbs at all. It doesn't seem to sweeten very well, though. Anyway, how many tablespoons of powdered Sweet'n Lo would equal the sweetness of a cup of sugar, and how many carbs would that many tablespoons have? Ditto for Splenda. At the Sweet'n Lo site, their substitution chart says 24 packets or 8 teaspoons bulk or 2 tablespoons liquid is the equivalent of 1 cup of sugar. The http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/search/ site says one packet has .89 carb grams. So,..... 24 packets x .89 = 21.36 grams of carbs to equal 1 cup of sugar. Somebody check my reasoning and my arithmetic. Am I correct? mel On Splenda, most of the 1 gram packets are filler (other sugars) and probably only 0.05 grams or less are actual Sucralose. You want to use 3/8 of a cup (approximately) of Splenda for one packet of Knox and 1/2 to 1 packet of Kool-aid. -- AF "Non Sequitur U has a really, really lousy debate team." --artyw raises the bar on rec.sport.baseball |

Carbs in Yeast?
I suppose that you haven't been able to look up the carb content of a
packet of Splenda. At the USDA website you so proudly quote below. It is on the box.... hint: the carb content of a packet of Splenda has almost zero contribution for the Sucralose. Virtually all of the carb content in Splenda packets comes from the diluting additives of Dextrose and Maltodextrin. Another hint, the carb content of a packet of Sweet'n Lo and of a packet of Splenda and of a packet of XYZ strong artificail sweetner will all be virtually identical. Because ..... the carb content of a packet is determined almost entirely by the carb content of the fillers (the diluting additives mentioned above). The net weight of a packet of all of the above is essentially determined by the weight of the fillers (the diluting additives mentioned above). The artifical sweetners are so strong in sweetening power that very small fractions of a gram are all that is required. Yes, pure artificial sweetners equivalent to 2 tsp of sugar would make teeney tiny pellet sized pills, and you might not be able to see the pure artificail sweetner pill without glasses. Just out of curiosity, why don't you just use sugar-free Jello? It seems to have 10 calories and 0 grams of carbs per serving. Jo Anne |
