Default Too Much Protein????

I know this is considered blasphamy on this board ... BUT if your calorie
intake is more then the number of calories that you are burning .... then
you WILL gain weight ... even as wonderful as the Atkins diet is ... it
still must conform to natural law ... if you calculate the calories you
consume and compare them to the calories you are burning ... what do you
get?

Just a thought ...

Okay ... everybody tell me how wrong I am ... LOL

Hi, I've been on the low-carb/Atkins diet for about 8 months now.
I've lost ~60 lbs. I've lost a lot of inches. Lately, I've been
getting discouraged because I've not really lost, but have gained a
few pounds. I don't eat any bread, pasta, potatoes, starches. I
drink around 80 oz of water a day. I'm trying to get into exercising.
I've started walking 20 minutes on the treadmill and do sit-ups. I've
really looked hard at what I've been eating and don't see where any
hidden carbs could be. I have had CF Diet Coke and sometimes C Diet
Coke, but only after I've had my water minimum of 64-80 oz a day. Has
anyone had experience with aspertame causing a slow down? How about
caffiene? I was reading on the Atkins website about too much protein.
How much is too much??? Any response would be helpful. Thank you.

Those things are possible, but a more basic question: are you still eating
the same number of calories you were when you were hauling 60 more lbs
around? As you lose weight, your caloric needs decrease and you have to
adjust according. In addition, for most people, weight loss slows as you
approach your goal. How close are you to your goal? Also, since you say
you're doing Atkins, have you found your ccl yet? How many carbs a day are
you eating?

I'd worry about those things before I started micromanaging on the
caffeine or aspartame, esp. if you were losing while using them before.

Not me, I think you're right. It's hard, IMO, to get too much protein per
se, but calories are like gas put into an infinitely expandable tank, they
either get burned or stored. Intake is limited on a low carb diet because
ou get satisfied more quickly but it still counts. The OP should either cut
the total food intake or, much better, increase the exercise.

Where did you get that idea? Almost everyone who has been on a low carb
weight loss diet for any length of time knows this.

And the book (DANDR), at least the editions I have all say that calories
DO count.
I never did have the impression that they didn't.

Single malt scotch is awesome (NO it does NOT have carbs as DON'T vodka,
gin, rum, bourbon, etc generally)
Malt can be made low carb through the judicious use of yeast.
Low carb beer? Uh...yeah.
Read the books.
You can have more than eggs for breakfast.
Yes calories do count.
Ketosticks are not neccessary to lose weight.

Anthony,

The Protein Power formulas are correct for the first three weeks of a low
carb diet, before your metabolism adjusts to a fat burning state. After
that, the research cited in Lyle MacDonald's book, The Ketogenic Diet,
suggests you need less protein because the body doesn't need to create as
much glucose to support the brain.

If you are doing a lot of lifting you might need more than the average
person, but most people aren't lifting that much.

The other benefit of cutting protein down to what you really need is that it
often gets rid of the bad breath that low carbers mistakenly attribute to
ketones. It really is ammonia byproducts of protein breakdown.

Anthony,

It is very easy to get too much protein on a low carb diet and it is a
problem beyond its additional calories.

My trainer, and also the book Protein Power, suggest 1 g of protein for
every lb of lean body mass. In my case that means about 160g protein a

day,
and frankly I don't find it very easy to get this much into me!

No it would not be. I only have a couple diet pepsis a week and having
them does not interfere with my weight loss any.

Good advice.

I seriously doubt that diet soda messes with weight loss, and will
until/unless there is good clinical evidence of it.

I doubt that very many people eat too much protein (or too little).
Unlike carbs, your body craves just the amount of protein it needs.
Eat too much of it and steak can go from a favorite food to completely
unappealing. You're doing great. Just remember to eat lots of leafy
green veggies.
