Atkins book vs. webpage & ratios
Hello all.
I'm new to this group and this is my first post. I've been on the Atkins diet for one week now and I've already lost about an inch around the waist and went about 5 pounds down (i guess only water). I would like to know from people who have bought and read the Atkins book if it contains any more information that can be found on the Atkins.com website and other sites about the Atkins diet. I'm asking this because I'm from country in Europe where the book can't be bought and hoping i'm not missing out. Currently I'm tracking my calorie/carb/fat/protein intake with a spreadsheet in Excel that automatically calculates all values for me, all I have to enter are the grams of each food. Anyway... back to the point... My current diet in induction phase consists of max 20g carbs (preferably less... i actually eat 10g or less on average), 110g of protein and 190g of fat. This gives approx. 2200 kcal and I target this ratio daily. (it's quite simple when playing with the spreadsheet Is my ratio correct to be in the ketogenic state and lose weight? Thank you for your answers. B-D_ Atkins since 7/24/03 199/194/165 |

Atkins book vs. webpage & ratios
" " wrote in message ... Hello all. I'm new to this group and this is my first post. I've been on the Atkins diet for one week now and I've already lost about an inch around the waist and went about 5 pounds down (i guess only water). You went down an entire INCH in one week? How big are you, just wondering. I would like to know from people who have bought and read the Atkins book if it contains any more information that can be found on the Atkins.com website and other sites about the Atkins diet. I'm asking this because I'm from country in Europe where the book can't be bought and hoping i'm not missing out. Yes, the book does contain alot more information than the website. Amongst other things, it explains a great deal about hyperinsulinism, how the metabolism works, ketosis, and has plenty of testimonials, which can be quite helpful. I would say import the book if you need to, just get it from ebay, from someone who is willing ti ship it overseas as long as you are willing to pay extra for the shipping. Currently I'm tracking my calorie/carb/fat/protein intake with a spreadsheet in Excel that automatically calculates all values for me, all I have to enter are the grams of each food. Anyway... back to the point... It is really unnecessary to track all of that, but some people do it anyhow. If you are counting calories, you should notice that the caloric intake goes down over time as your cravings stop to be for bad foods, but for good foods. Not all calories are created equally, and your body will burn "good" calories alot more efficiently than bad ones. Make sure you arent cutting fat, you cant get enough fat! i cook things in BUTTER for crying out loud lol. Fat is your FRIEND during induction, and if you dont get enough of it then you may start to feel terrible as you continue induction. That's neat info, but again, dont worry about the fat and calories so much. You dont need to, and it wont "help" you do the diet, because your body will tell you when you are not hungry and when you are. Keep in mind that often times if you feel hungry, you may just need to have a big drink of water. To be in the "ketogenic" state is simple really... In fact, atkins stresses 20g of carbs and then later on states (more or less): "I used 20g of carbohydrates as an example to show you that ANYONE can loose weight on induction..." Right there he admits that most people have a different trigger level. I would say that if you are eating 10g of carbs a day, you may not be getting sufficient green vegitables in your diet, which will lead to a vitamin defficiency, which could make you feel like you have flu like symptoms. Dont be like myself and be paranoid of carbs, because ultimately you will find that staying at 10g gets boring, and really probably isnt good for you (see my mention about vegitables). To be in ketosis doesnt require much my friend, just a lack of carbs will do it, its a trigger your body goes through to make sure that your body gets sufficient fuel. Like atkins describes in his book, simply put: Your body sends insulin from the pancreas to your bloodstream. The insulin breaks down the carbohydrate and carries the glucose to your cells for fuel. When the cells are full, it stores excess glucose in your liver and muscles. When THOSE stores are full, it stores the glucose as FAT. By starving your body of carbohydrate, your body goes to the first stores for glucose, the muscles and the liver (this is why you may have felt tired or irritable after 2-3 days), and after that supply is used up, it breaks down fat to access the stored glucose, which it uses as fuel. So all you are doing by going to under 20g of carbs is ensuring your body makes that switch to burning first the stored glucose in the liver and muscle, and then the stored glucose in the fat. its not really dependant on the other things you eat (like protien). In fact, someone on a fast will also go into ketosis, but they will also burn protien during ketosis, which means they are burning lean muscle fat, and eventually become very sick. You must feed your body proper fats (good fats), as well as fiber so you do not get constipated. Make sure you are supplimenting your diet with a good multivitamin as well. Remember that you can eat many fiberous carby veggies, because the dietary fiber carbs subtract from the overal carb count, and your net carb count is lower than what it would be if there were no fiber present. The reason for this is that fiber has no sugary carbs, so this does not effect your blood sugar levels, etc and overall does not impact your daily carb limit. That is all the "advice" i can give you, because i am new to all this, but revek, luna, and many others have taught me so much over the past few weeks its insane! Steven. |
