Hospitals ban Atkins diet
"Anthony" wrote in message ... "Barry Smith" wrote in message ... The BBC sent me a mail containing the following: A BBC programme called Real Story is doing an investigation into the diet and would like to know more about your experiences and opinions on the subject. If you would like to help them with their enquiries please fill in the attached survey and email it to: So you could send something to her to help balance out the disinformation.. Thanks. I've emailed her my Atkins experience, tho' as I'm in the US she may not be interested. I don't think she'll mind.. She knew I was in Australia after all.. |

Rachel Huskey (was Hospitals ban Atkins diet
Hi Debbie, just wondering how long the teen was on Atkin's WOE before she
died. One article said she was 225 pounds making me wonder if she was just starting to eat low carb. After reading about her it sounded like SADS, the reason that teens drop dead for no apparent reason. http://www.sads.org/ Sounds like the parents are looking for a scapegoat where there may not be one. Nancy J "Debbie Cusick" wrote in message ... Does anyone know who this Rachel Huskey is who gets mentioned in the article, where they say: "...followed the death of 16-year-old American Rachel Huskey, who died from heart failure after trying to lose weight. A team of experts who investigated her death said it was probably due to the way the Atkins diet had upset her metabolism." I wish I knew more about this. Have to see if I can google her up. Debbie "Jim Marnott" wrote in message ... UK hospitals are banning Atkins for their patients. http://www.doatkins.com/html/index.php |

Nancy J Frankly, we have no idea what kind of diet she may have been on. Atkins diet seems to be a catch-all name for all lo-carb dieting. Some think lo-carb means no-carb, some think induction is the diet. Some think you just do it until you loose the weight you want and then can go back to eating as before. The mis-information amazes me. :-) BJ |

Nancy J Not Debbie, but if I may: Rachel Huskey was a Sturgeon Missouri native, and she died three years ago. If I remember correctly, she wasn't actually on the diet at the time. She'd been dieting for somewhere between 8 and 12 weeks, then went off of it, or went off it and then started it again and been on only two weeks, or something like that. I have a vague recollection that her going off the diet was one of the little facts they didn't mention right at first. The investigative team (out of Columbia Missouri, I believe) pulled the case off the shelves with an eye to using it as amunition when Taubes's article hit in June of 02. It had been sitting on the 'back burner' as an unsolved case up til then, I think. The severe electrolyte imbalance mentioned (very low calcium and potassium levels) indicates the girl was most probably using diruetics in addition to dieting, probably without telling her mother, in the hope that it would make her lose faster. Then again, low potassium can be caused by many things .. including having a cardiac arrest and the drugs they give during resuscitation. Funny how they don't mention that, not even to 'rule it out'. This is the original news story as it "broke" just about a year ago. http://www.connect.more.net/lists/mo...2.11/0000.html If I were the suspicious type, I would be noting that this story is making the rounds at the same time it did last year. A little trick, I would think, to make the news seem more imediate to readers without actually being inaccurate. Isn't it interesting, that in all this time, only one person has died in this manner? http://www.sma.org/smj2002/septsmj02/index.cfm#stevens is the source for all the media attention. It costs 20 per viewing for the article if you are not a member, and I haven't found anybody yet who is, who is willing to read the thing for us. revek not that rich |

Ah, thanks. As soon as I read the "heart arrythmia" verdict my first thought
was "lack of potassium" and later on the article says "They discovered levels of potassium and calcium had been critically low, which could have caused the irregular heartbeat." but of course Atkins suggests a potassium supplement. And none of the articles give any details about what the girl was actually eating, what else she may have been doing, how long she was doing it. I certainly don't think there are enough details here. It was at the height of the Metabolife clones showing up in every WalMart and pharmacy. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if she was taking one. Maybe not, but for an otherwise healthy teenager it is hardly a weight that
is likely to cause death. Debbie "Jane Lumley" wrote in message What I can't believe was the way no-one felt that being 100 kilos might be at all bad for her health. |
