Default Medifast Low Carb?

I just started the Medifast Diet 2 weeks ago, is this considered a
low-carb diet?

I let myself get to 247 and decided I had enough, also from
recommendations from my doctor, had to loose.

I have been on the diet for 2 weeks and so far have lost 8 lbs.

I also started walking in the evenings to try and facilitate the loss,
I know walking is not much. But believe me it is for me.

I would like to hear from others who have had success with this.

I also started a Blog, with my day to day activities, it helps me keep
focused on what I am trying to do.

I would eventually like to loose 100 lbs.

Thanks all

Jeff

Default Medifast Low Carb?

Medifast looks a bit different than JUST Shakes from 20 years ago. LOL

Medifast Plus for Diabetics: Net 6g, low glycemic
Calories: 90 Total Fat: 1 gram Saturated Fat: 0 grams Cholesterol: 0 mg
Sodium: 250 mg Potassium: 400 mg Total Carbs: 9 grams Dietary Fiber: 3 grams
Sugars: 5 grams Protein: 14 grams Vitamins & Minerals: 20-50% daily value

Medifast 70 M/W: Net 10
Calories: 100 Total Fat: 1 gram Saturated Fat: 0 grams Cholesterol: 0 mg
Sodium: 250 mg Potassium: 400 mg Total Carbs: 13 grams Dietary Fiber: 3
grams Sugars: 9 grams Protein: 14 grams Vitamins & Minerals: 20-50% daily
value

So you can see the diabetic formula has a few less Net carbs, 6g vs. 10g.
and they claim it's "low glycemic".

All in all, that kind of diet has it's own rules and "low carb" isn't really
a factor. It's designed to be nutritionally complete (whatever that means)
and you lose weight because overall calories are reduced. IOW, you only get
500 calories a day (or whatever the plan calls for) while getting a full
day's nutrition in terms of vitamins and minerals, etc. And voila, weight
loss.

I don't know if Optifast is still around, and there's another one, but the
name escapes me. :-)

Anyway, just check the labels, and YMMV!

HTH,

Steve

Yikes! 500 calories a day? Can an adult even be sustained on 500 calories a
day? I know I'd never want to try that.....

Me either, it sounds ghastly. I don't know why anyone would want to do
that, unless it's a matter of life and death. :-)

Dear Scionyx
I ran into your message quite accidentally while researching about some
details on 'Low carb diets' and thought of sharing some of my
findings. I've read at
http://medical-health-care-informati...iets/index.asp

that Low carb diets are based on the principle that a diet low in
carbohydrates leads to decreased production of body's insulin,
resulting in consumption of fat stores as energy source.
I hope the above is of some help to you as well.

Low carb is generally plans that use lowered carb intake to
effect loss without lowering total caloric intake past levels
that trigger refeed rebounds. Since MediFast is a very low
calorie plan, it is only incidentally low carb and thus not
considered low carb.

I let myself get to 247 and decided I had enough, also from
recommendations from my doctor, had to loose.

What's the maintenance phase of MediFast look like?
If it doesn't have a maintenance phase it's a fad diet to
me. The time to consider maintenance is *now*. Losing
is easier than keeping it off - Consider using low carb to
keep it off.

I also started walking in the evenings to try and facilitate the loss,
I know walking is not much. But believe me it is for me.

When walking now longer counts as much - When you're
in good enough shape that you can walk briskly on the flat
for over 30 minutes without that interfering with a conversation,
then you're in good enough shape that you'll start to doubt
that walking should be counted as exercise and it will be
time to look into additional activities. Until then, exercise is
moving - Never let yourself get sucked into the false notion
that it only counts as exercise if it happens at a paid gym.

First, the answer is yes, only because the technology in packing that 500
calories with enough nutritional density to sustain the body has improved
over the last 20 years or so. Also, any diet will work for some people,
just not EVRYONE. :-)

But I do agree with you, as well as the next poster who mentioned being
under a Dr's care while doing it.

20+ years ago, was it the "Cambridge" low-cal-shake diet that a couple of
people misused and died?

On a funnier note, I was on such a diet many years ago and for lunch was
making up a Strawberry shake at work. A co-worker was in my cubicle
watching and gave me a funny look when I started chewing as it was VERY
thick.

My comment to his look was, "Lumps."

Default Medifast Low Carb?

Hi Jeff. I've been on the Medifast Diet for nearly 10 weeks and have lost
31 pounds (as of yesterday); my goal is 85 pounds. The Medifast Diet is
low carb, low fat and controlled range of calories. It is not a fad diet
by any means. Medifast has been around for 25 years and was available for
many of those years through a doctor only. If you are still on the diet
and have any other questions, look me up on the MyMedifast board or
through my Medifast Blog. I'd be glad to assist. Hope this helps.
