Default Is it safe for Type 2 ??

I'm new to group....

Is it safe for a person newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes
to go on the low carb diet??
I went on Atkins years ago, and lost 40 pounds, but got
scared of what all the meat was doing to my blood pressure.
I haven't gained the weight back, but now I have diabetes
and high blood pressure (not blaming Atkins for that) and
can't get my blood sugar under control.

Are there diabetics who eat low carb?? Thanks

Yes. I've been a type 2 for over 25 years and have normal blood sugars
levels due to low carb (and exercise)

Also, low carb doesn't mean you eat "all that meat" and it is doubtful that
"all that meat" will worsen your blood pressure anyhow. {Since you wrote
that, it makes you sound as if you don't know how to do Atkins or that
you're a troll.}

In fact, based on where you are now with high blood pressure and type 2
diabetes, you'd like have been much better off now if you had stayed on
Atkins, as written in his various books.

In August 2007, I had elevated glucose levels. My doctor told me that the next
step would be medication if I didn't make some changes.

I did some reading and starting LCing. I cut out all of the "white stuff"
(sugar, flour, pasta, rice, etc) and ate meat and vegetables. No more sodas of
any kind. No beer, either. 8-(

After 6 weeks I went back in for another blood test and my glucose level,
triglcerides, and LDL cholesterol readings had all dropped a lot. The doctor was
pleased enough to let me go 3 months until my next set of tests.

That set of results was even better than the first set. No more talk of diabetes
medication--and I'm down 40 lbs. Losing the weight has allowed me to cut back
50% on the drugs I'd been taking for elevated blood pressure.

He then loosened the leash a little and gave me 4 months until I have to go in
for more blood tests.

But now I'm not worried--I'm still losing weight and I know that my blood
readings will be at least the same or better than they have been.

Congrats on the weight loss, and the good lab results.

Not a troll based on prior posting history. The same
account posted on ASDLC back in 1999 and 2000
in a way that was clearly not trolling.

In fact, based on where you are now with high blood pressure and type 2
diabetes, you'd like have been much better off now if you had stayed on

That "as written in his various books" part matters. The
comment that low carbing led to increased blood pressure
is so unlikely it makes the poster sound like a troll but far
more likely it's from not following the directions as they
are actually written. People seem to scan the book and
not have any idea what the actual directions are.

Dr Atkins cautioned that a diabetic should work carefully
with a doctor when starting on Atkins. Low carbing would
tend to reduce blood sugar and thus may require lowered
dosage of any medications. While this advice is specific
to the Atkins plan I think it's good enough to apply to other
low carb plans including self designed ones.

Here is a new article about a diabetes doctor in the UK that
recommends low carb for her patients...

Approximately 4 years I was diagnosed as T2 diabetic with an HbA1c of
9.0. I've controlled my blood sugar completely with controlled-carb
eating ever since (no sugar, simple starches or processed grains,
high-fructose fruit or high-glycemic vegetables) and my A1C has been
well under 6.0 for 3-1/2 years now -- with no meds. So the answer is
yes, not only are there are diabetics who eat low carb, there are many
of us who do not need medications for diabetes because of our low-carb
way of eating.

It's not only safe; it's the only sensible thing to do. Carbohydrates
are poison to a diabetic.

I went on Atkins years ago, and lost 40 pounds, but got scared of what
all the meat was doing to my blood pressure.

Why? If meat does anything to your blood pressure, it'll probably lower
it. Since going back to strict low-carb a couple months ago (and using
a lot of salt to support my weak adrenals) my BP has gone from 140/90 to
120/78.

I haven't gained the weight back, but now I have diabetes and high
blood pressure (not blaming Atkins for that) and can't get my blood
sugar under control.

Read "Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution." Also, if you aren't already
testing your own blood sugar, get a tester. (Check this group's
archives for plenty of discussion on that.) When you can test your
blood sugar several times a day for a few days, you'll get a much better
idea of how foods are affecting you. The first time I had a small bowl
of cake and ice cream at a birthday party after getting my BG meter,
seeing my BG jump up to 160 was quite an eye-opener. It's not quite
like looking through a microscope and watching the cells in your
pancreas dying, but it's powerful nonetheless.
