How do I get rid of my late eating habit?
Hiii everybody!
Although I don't post often, I'm still reading you guys, this NG is a fabulous source of information which is why I'm bringing this problem to you.... What can I do to prevent myself from eating when I come home at night??? I always maintain sensible eating habits during the day, no matter where I am. At home, at school, at work or running around town, I manage to keep my intakes at around 1800/2000 cals split throughout the day in four or five light meals. I exercise twice a week at a gym. But when I come back home, it's like my brain opens the floodgates and this impossible hunger pang gets a hold of me every time. I can't do homework or anything until I eat, and a small bunch of carrot never does the trick. I'm not losing anything this way... I *know* I'm just taking in fat by doing this since I go to sleep 2, 3 hours later... but I can't help it!! Even if I eat something small before coming home, it's the act of "being home late at night and awake" that makes me hungry, I think. Most of the time, I can't go straight to bed either: my stomach becomes a big hole filled with acid. Besides, I have too much stuff to do and the only time I can get cleaning or washing done is at night when I get back. So going to bed early is definitely not a solution. so... WHAT can I do to get rid of this nasty habit?? Endure a couple of weeks of insomnia? I'm afraid this will result in my resulting horrible mood making me eat even more. Has anyone experienced this? -F |

From: Ignoramus26983 lid Date: 12/01/2004 21:14 GMT Standard Time Message-id: Just say no. So what is you can't do homework once or twice. Do not eat at night, suffer, and it will be better soon, in a few days or so. (this assumes you eat reasonably during the day, again). I was a big time night time eater. Even waking up at night to eat. Then I just stopped eating at night cold turkey. Suffered for a few days. Survived and I am done with that disgusting habit. Eating is a disgusting habit????? Even, eating at night is a disgusting habit????? I agree that eating the wrong foods (whatever they are for you) at *whatever* time of day or night can be thought of as disgusting - whatever it takes to help you stop eating the wrong foods, huh? But simple eating is not, and can't be disgusting. I know you use the "don't eat after xpm" rule and that it has helped you - but I eat whenever I'm hungry - I just choose to eat *good* food, not bad. It's 9.15pm here and I just ate an ounce of cheese - because I wanted it and because it's one of the set choices on my WOE that helps top up my calcium and I didn't eat it earlier. It certainly wasn't disgusting - it was very tasty. Cellach |

The OP should "save" some of his/her calorie budget for a nighttime snack or meal even. But don't ever think that eating itself is disgusting. Somethings are disgusting to eat, of course, like brains of *any* creature and worms. But even then if that's all you have between you and death's door, go for it. ;-) Tonia |

If it's carrots or fruit or veg you're eating, you're not taking in bad fat at any rate. Bananas and avocados have appreciable fat but it's not the deadly stuff IIRC. Just make sure it's low fat or fat free. And I would up the exercise. I'm trying to exercise EVERY day this year instead of just half the year. I have learned T'ai Chi and Tae Bo and if I can't walk I do one or the other inside while watching the 6 p.m. news. Falfien wrote: Hiii everybody! How do I get rid of my late eating habit?
How does exercise help with not eating at night? Just curious.
i I don't want to create a bad atmosphere, but can I just say something to you, Ignoramus? I appreciate your advice and all - as I do with everyone, but sometimes you come across as just trying to wind people up. This group is supposed to be for support, and some of these wee comments don't help. I think Patricia had a good point to make there; she doesn't think that eating at night is a problem as long as it's controlled and accompanied by an appropriate amount of exercise. Okay, the exercise point was indirectly related but it doesn't mean that she should stop herself from making it. MadJock |

Just look at it objectively and regard everything else as psychobabble. (/sarcasm *off*) I checked out the Discovery Channel Body Challenge and their meal plan encourages eating in the evening (and the morning etc.) as part of a 5-meal per day plan of eating every 2-3 hrs to keep blood sugar constant. The wording was something to the effect of banishing the myth of eating after a certain time... Even Mistress Krista's site advocates 5 small meals a day. That said, if one has a habit of eating too much at night then it might take some time of not eating at night to deal with the habit, though I found that doing like Tonia says and budgeting a snack for evenings works fine in my situation though YMMV. I sometimes like to eat a small bit of protein before bed; iti helps me sleep. Martha |
