Hi all,

I lost another 1.5 lb this week. I'm pleased with this loss, but I'm
not in the mood to enjoy it much because I'm in shock with the rest of
The Netherlands because of the second political murder over here in
2.5 years.

This morning one of our most controversial filmmakers, Theo van Gogh
was stabbed and shot dead by a 26-year old muslim fundamentalist from
Dutch/Moroccan origin. The exact motive of the killer isn't known yet,
but it's most likely van Gogh was killed because of his strong
opinions on the fundamentalist islam. He repeatedly took a strong
stand against fundamentalist views in islam.

Theo van Gogh was as controversial in The Netherlands as Michael Moore
is in the US.

Congratulations on your weight loss this week. I'm sorry for the sad
events in your country. When life/world events occur, it's hard to
imagine that our own small efforts mean anything. But our own life is
all any of us have, and in some ways, the best thing we can do for
ourselves, our loved ones, our communities, and our world is to be the
best person we can be, healthy in mind, spirit, and body. You're doing
a good job on the latter. Keep going.

I will. This murder is a temporary setback in my state of mind and
will not diminish my will to lose weight. It won't change the way I
operate online and offline either. The only thing is I'm not that
happy at the moment because of this murder.

Thanx.

I was sorry to hear that on the news this morning and recalled the
last assassination there. I guess it is shocking that in what I would
consider a low-key, pleasant country such things can occur. One's
controversial views should be loudy debated perhaps but not lead to
death.

I totally agree with you on this. The Netherlands definitely has lost
its innocence for good.

Over here everybody draws parallels between the assassination of Pim
Fortuyn nearly 2.5 years ago and this one. Especially because both
were strong advocates of free speech. Van Gogh was a great admirerer
of Fortuyn and in fact his last movie was about the assassination of
Fortuyn. He just finished shooting the movie and was on his way to
look at a first cut of the movie when he was murdered on the way from
his house to his office this morning.

Some people in Dutch Usenet groups point out that this assassination
happened exactly 911 days after the assassination of Fortuyn. They see
a strong symbolism in this as if the killer planned to kill van Gogh
on this particular date. I find this hard to swallow at the moment
because nothing is known yet about the killer's motives to assassinate
van Gogh.

good loss, don't let politics mess up your day, mourn for his family and

You're right. I already prayed for consolation of his family and the
country in general, but haven't prayed for the offender yet. Not
letting this mess up my day is difficult because we are not used to
this kind of assassinations over here and the whole country is in
shock. It will take a couple of days before everything is back to
normal, but fortunately the US elections more and more keep our minds
of this tragedy.
