Long distance running
I don't do actual long distance running but I run as much as 6 miles 4 times
a week and occasionally run 8 on about 50 or less grams a day. It hasn't really made a huge impact but there are definitely low energy days. I find it helps to run just after I eat, usually mid-day. I would imagine running longer may be more difficult at that carb level but can't tell you from experience. Mertz "Bill" wrote in message link.net... Anyone have any succes with long distance running while on a low carb diet ? Yes, just make sure to adjust your caloric intake upwards to compensate for the increased energy output of running. Also, work up your mileage slowly, your body has to get accustomed to mobilizing it's fat stores for energy quickly enough to support LD running. -josh |

Long distance running

.net... Anyone have any succes with long distance running while on a low carb diet ? I cross train biking, trail running, hiking, or cycling, with one long event and one moderately long event on the weekend. For example, last weekend I did 1 hour 40 mins of moderately high intensity trail running (at 80% max HR - singletrack hilly terrain) on Saturday; and 3 hours 15 mins cycling (at 60% max HR - over hilly terrain) on Sunday. On weekdays, my carb rate is about 60-80gm/day, and that allows 45-60 mins daily training with light weights on M/W/F. On weekends however I use a TKD (Targeted Ketogenic Diet), which allows extra carbs before, during, and immediately after especially long or intense periods of exercise. In addition to a base of adequate protiens and fats, the night before a demanding event, I eat a measured amount of complex carbs such as wild rice. Normally I would eat only a large portion of vegetables with my weekday meals and very little carbs. During the endurance even and for up to 2 hours after I eat generous amounts of simple carbs with a little protien. This allows for great recovery. Many in this group seem to have had success eating very low carb even during long-distance eudurance events. Some also suggest that this is possible for everyone if one gives one's body time (several months) to adapt to burning primarily fats for fuel. That may work for many, but it did not work for me. Last year I ate a very restricted carb diet, but with plenty of vegetables and plenty of protien and an adequate amount of fats (I was not losing weight because I had reached my goal). I started this regime in January, and by June my training was far below what it had been the year before and my conditioning was sub-par. I simply could not recover from long-distance events and had a great deal of trouble keeping up my daily workouts. I took far more days off than before. Until I learned about TKD my performance was very disappointing and I really didn't enjoy exercise anymore. Now that I use TKD I once again love to exercise and it gives me alot of power that I lacked last year. Nobody can tell me that I didn't give my body a chance to adapt. People are different. I was not a gifted endurance athlete to start with, but was a very good sprinter. I take issue with the purests in this group that suggest that carbs are not a good fuel source for exercise. I know many in this group have issues with insulin resistance, and that will have to be taken into account, but I suggest that exercise metabolism IS different from the daily metabolism. The muscles have a place to store up to 2 hours of glycogen fuel. Despite what some say in this group, you CAN lose weight eating a low carb diet even if your glycogen stores are not empty. I say that you have to know where your glycogen reserves are from experience, and once they are full or close to full, you simply back off the carbs until you need more of them. Carbs are a special fuel to be sure, but are not one to be disdained. It is precisely the abuse of this special fuel that leads to health problems. Once one has those health problems, or if one is losing weight, then of course one has to tailor their program to those needs. But for me targeted use of carb fuels lets me enjoy the power I always had before in my exercise, while eating a low carb diet the rest of the time keeps me healthy and my weight controlled. - Tony |

I completed a marathon walk of 800 miles whilst on a high protein diet and noticed no side-effects other than deeper/longer sleep. Come to think of it, I ate very little carb over a 19 day period. I had previously used large quantities of Dextrosol on other walks, but on this particular occasion I had trained for 3 months without, so I suppose my body had accomodated to drawing on fats. kev |
