Same here Brian. I also use a lot of Splenda in my every day kitchen
routine. I'm diabetic and drinking regular soda would really cramp my
style, glucose wise. Besides, I've been drinking diet soda for so many
years, regular soda tastes sickeningly sweet to me. My taste buds have
been well trained

Most of the time I drink lemon water that is sweetened with just a little
Splenda, and I also cook with Splenda. There are diabetics on both sides
of my family, so I have avoided sugar since I was in high school. On
special occasions and during the holidays, I will have a treat, other than
that, I avoid consuming sugar.

This lemon water sounds good! I will try it. I make iced coffee with
splenda and vanilla and 2% milk that tastes like Starbucks Frappacino.
It's dangerous if you're sensitive to caffeine though--like chugging
speed! I love Splenda, for me it has no aftertaste. If it turns out to be
harmful I will be in trouble. I keep a canister of Splenda next to the one
with sugar on my kitchen counter, but nobody but guests use the sugar.
Like you, I have avoided sugar since adolescence. We do have diabetics
in our family, but worse (to a teen) we have FAT people in the family!
I was not so much worried about disease as getting fat.

Obesity IS a disease.
Today, I went back on the diet. I want to lose at least 20 pounds by
late Spring, hopefully more. So far today, 3 cups of coffee with
Splenda and a little half & half, 1 small can of mushrooms, about a
tablespoon of flax seeds, and two chicken breasts, fried unbreaded in
peanut oil. Tomorrow morning I'm going to go buy a huge amount of
lettuce. I can happily eat lettuce with a tiny bit of fresh-squeezed
lemon and a light sprinkle of grated Parmesan.
I'm also going to buy in-the-shell sunflower seeds. They are the best
diet food.

"Dieting" can be many different things. I know a few things, my
plasma triglycerides are going to drop hugely. I'm going to lose a
bunch of belly fat.
My HDL levels are going to increase because of the increased physical
activity, and I'll be more mindful of taking my policosanol. I'm
already getting the energy boost from 20 g of carbs in the last 36
hours.
This is ALL good. Thanksgiving Day I'll put back on a full load of
glycogen, but a couple of days later, I'll be ketogenic again.

I don't know what in hell is going on with my weight. I am now 50 pounds
heavier than I was back in May. I just keep packing it on without
changing my eating habits. My GP and Cardiologist are stumped and so is
the nutritionist. I'm scheduled to go to the adrenal doc next week.
Everyone seems to think something is out of whack because they did remove
an adrenal gland way back when and my meds have changed a lot.

Anyway, I'll be joining you on that lettuce diet if They can't figure out
what's going on with this thing. Lettuce with lemon and fresh cracked
pepper for me

Another nice topping is a little bit of freshly fried and crumbled
bacon, and some sliced tomato. BLT, no bread. That's good with the
pepper as well.

Adrenal issues can make a huge difference.

I'm guessing you're on a glucocorticoid of some sort or have you been
weaned to just living on the one adrenal?

Among other things, high evening cortisol causes massive cravings and
hunger... the eat-all-evening syndrome. So depending on how a
glucocorticoid is dosed and when can make a big difference to your appetite.

Also, cortisol levels being weird can mask thyroid problems - you can
have normal TSH even with wildly abnormally low T3 and T4. So make sure
they test free T3 and T4, not just TSH.

Obesity isn't a disease, it's a condition and dieting is good if done right.

When I started gaining weight when I turned 40, the addition of fiber
and fruits and vegetables helped me get it off and keep it off. The key
is, find things in those groups you really LOVE, not just stuff you
tolerate.
Could be you have an endocrine problem. I was so dreading the hard
work of taking off weight, I was actually hoping I was hypothyroid ...
alas, it was not to be.

A healthy diet is good. "Dieting" is not, and messes with your metabolism.

Is that "conventional wisdom," or do you have research to back that
up*?

* "Conventional wisdom" that conflicts with scientific evidence is
conventional foolishness.
