Default High-fat Atkins diet damages blood vessels: study

this is a good one...

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The high-fat Atkins diet can cause long-term damage
to blood vessels, as well as some of the inflammation linked with heart and
artery disease, U.S. researchers reported on Tuesday.

On the other hand, this study included 50% more subjects than the
other study you mentioned in the other thread where it reported the
opposite.
This study had 18 subjects while the other one favorable to low carb
included 12 subjects.

Both are very limited in size and length.
The article, to its credit, did day the following....
"Many low-fat diets allow processed carbohydrates such as white flour,
which have also been shown to be unhealthy, experts agree."

How many people link all low fat diets together into one big bowl,
with SnackWells scattered on top of Kellogs Sugar Frosted Flakes, and
then proclaim the entire group as having poor results.
One can do the same on the other side with equal absurdity.

Thirty days is long-term. Sure. The misinformation never ends. From an
article in the Detroit News this morning about "energy bars":

High-protein
Excess protein is not going to help you build muscle, unless, of course, you
are an athlete or body builder, in which case you would need more calories
in general from all food groups. Americans eat too much protein anyway
(given our biggie-sized portions and current weight crisis), and too much
protein is taxing on the kidneys.

Biology lesson for the day: Protein gets filtered in the kidneys,
carbohydrates and fat in the liver. And the kidneys can only take so much.
Look for bars with no more than 10 grams of protein.

Think about this: For a 150-pound person, about 65-70 grams of protein is
recommended (depending on other health variables) per day. Some protein bars
contain 35 to 45 grams of protein -- that's over half your daily
recommendation, and you haven't eaten breakfast yet.

This is evidently based on a phone call, not a published study.

Well, it also was in a paper verbally presented to the American Heart
Association in Orlando Florida, recently.

Still, not "published" in the sense of doubters having access to written
critical details and logic and having been subject to "peer review".

Vascular inflammation is a serious thing.

However, they used markers for inflammation and not direct examinations for
inflammation. This is a common way to do bad science in medical studies.
The problem is that the experimental conditions may have altered the markers
without changing the actual condition of concern.

"Atkins" done with foods that have additives may produce an outcome based on
the additives.

18 subjects and 30 days is too short to be taken seriously. However, it
does create the impetus to do a proper study.

If I win the lottery ten times, I'll do the study myself.

Yes, it's obviously a BS "study". Another example of Taube's "bad science".

Fund the study, or do the study?

It's just amazing how long it takes "old thinking" and "built-in biases" to
die. Well, these things die when the people die...so, a few generations, I
guess.

They had a blurb about this on the noon news today, something like: The
Atkins Diet can cause damage to your veins and danger of a heart attack in
as little as 30 days. Drives me crazy, one day they will have something
that is almost enlightened and the next day something as off base as this.
