Make a 40 to 50 YearPlan to Nationally Combat Obesity ???
How would you go about doing this, if you had the chance?
The UK Government's Foresight programme in the Government Office for Science was asked to consider how society might deliver a sustainable response to obesity in the UK over the next 40 years..... Its projects entail the rigorous use of sciene to inform futures thinking in the Government. http://www.foresight.gov.uk/Obesity/...nal/Index.html To make a long story short, the expert panel could find no known concerted strategies or policy models that adequately address the problem, in the UK or Europe. So they struggled to define a path or paths that could be sustained and lead to the desired outcome. However, they were certain that no ONE "solution" will work and that the status of obesity knowledge will expand and change significantly in the future. --------------------------------- They will send you the report for free at the above website, even internationally. Mine arrived last week. There is a free CD of associated technical/science reports. This is an unusual report because they are convinced that the problem is real and needs long term action, but nobody has any proven methodologies that are known to work when applied at the level of a whole population. They intrepret the issue of obesity (obesities, plural) as fairly complex and produce some very interesting graphic representations of the interplays and factors involved. They define a "positive energy balance" as basic involving multiple influences on the energy balance. A) Physiological Factors B) Eating Habits C) Activity Levels D) Psychosocial influences. They allege a positive feedback cycle that locks us into a pattern of positive energy balance as individuals and at a societal level. Modern cheap foods are claimed to have increased palatability and ability to heighten sensory stimulation..... [which is an expected product of successful modern food technologists]. Potential changes include: 1) Behavioral (individual, group, family, .... ) 2) Environmental (activity and food, ...) 3) Biology ( .... ) 4) Technology (drugs, health monitoring, food products, stop "saving energy expended by individuals", ... ) It is unusual reading in that it is so rare that one reads very long term "plans" without almost already having specific maps and weapons ready to make the assault. --------------------------------------------------- What would you do to solve the national problem of obesity (or obesities) within a generation or so? You can order or view the reports here for free. http://www.foresight.gov.uk/Obesity/...nal/Index.html |

How would you go about doing this, if you had the chance? In the USA, it's start with the "farm bill." No more subsides for commodity crops (carby crap), and lots of incentives to encourage small farmers to switch to vegetable farming. Expand the food stamp and WIC programs, but exclude processed carby crap like crackers, instant mashed potatoes, boxed mac 'n cheese dinner and the like from food stamps, and merge the eligibility of items between the two programs. I could go on, if I had the time, but simply, broccoli, carrots, cheese, poultry, should be more economical choices for everyone, especially those on govt. subsidy. As long as a person can use food stamps to buy pancake mix and pancake syrup, our nation will be fatty central. --Bryan |

The McGovern Select Senate Committee in 1977 laid the grounds for the "high carb is healthy, high fat is bad" experiment in American diet. The relatively unproven (long term safety in clinical trials) low carb diet is your solution. So, you would have us embark on "Another Great Diet Experiment", although this time there is a little more experience, and some theoretical justification. But, it is still considered an unproven hypothesis that it would be safe for the whole population. Thanks for your thoughts. |
