Default Excel experts, need help

I've heard from the author of carbcheck, my prefered pda program, and
he says he probably won't get around to finishing the usda file for
inclusion in the program anytime soon, and sent me some tools to do it
myself. Alas, alack, I do not have excel which I need to do the job.
I have looked at the sample and compared it to the usda file, so it's
mostly deleting a lot of unused columns and rearranging some things,
except the usda file doesn't have the numbers for serving sizes
smaller than 100 grams (yet lists grams per cup and such). A colum or
two showing smaller serving sizes would help us poor math-deficient
types avoid trying to divide in our heads. A lot of tedious work, I
know. Any takers?

If you are on broadband, go to www.openoffice.org and download the program.
It will read and write all MS Office files and it is free. If you have
trouble with it, you can email it to me at http://tinyurl.com/se39 and I'll
have a look at it and see if it is something I have time to do.

If you can post the instructions he gave you, I'll take a look at it. I
use OpenOffice, and am pretty good at spreadsheets. I'd also like to have
the USDA database in spreadsheet form.

It is a 2.5 meg file. The tools (zipped) are only 64k in comparison,
and the instructions are zipped with the tools. I can send them to
you email, or you can send me a throwaway yahoo id which I can add to
the access list for yahoo breifcase (yahoo is getting greedy and will
only allow yahoo ids to access the page unless you pay for premium
service-- as if. They can't even stop the swen virus from flooding my
account every two hours). Your call.

I only need the tools, I already have the database. I'm not sure what the
yahoo id is, but you can e-mail the file to chakolate AT hotmail DOT com.

Thanks!

There are a few other neat links there as well

I'm not an Excel "expert," but for your needs I may do. I'm coming into
this thread with this post. What are you trying to do?

The author of a pda program I like to use has moved to another
platform and isn't going to finish what he started (grr). It's a
simple carb counter, combining the ADA's carb lists with some fastfood
restaraunts and *was* going to contain the USDA database too -- and
nothing else, no meal plans no calorie watch, no excercise journal.
But it needs to be cleaned up and converted to a format usable by the
program. Adding custom foods doesn't sound difficult (just input into
already created fields), but cleaning up the USDA database looks to be
a headache to me (because all of the commas in the name fields will
screw up the comma separated value file it has to be converted to, for
one), and I've never actually used excel before so I don't know all
the little tricks.

Thanks, but I already have the USDA database. What I was hoping for was a
spreadsheet form for it. The interface they already have is nice, but
doesn't copy well.
