The Opposite View of the Atkins Diet
It's interesting and disturbing what other medical professionals think
of the diet. I've changed my life for the better with the Atkins approach and supplemental vita-nutrients. Your opinions please: http://www.atkinsexposed.org/ |

The Opposite View of the Atkins Diet
From the website vegetarianbaby.com:
"Michael Greger, M.D. is a general practitioner specializing in VEGETARIAN NUTRITION, a prize-winning cook, and an internationally recognized speaker on a number of important public health and social justice issues. He is author of Heart Failu Diary of a Third Year Medical Student and has contributed to a number of books on VEGANISM and food safety issues. " -EMPHASIS ADDED http://www.vegetarianbaby.com/writers.shtml From atkinsexposed.org: "Michael Greger, M.D., is a general practitioner, a founding member of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine, and an internationally recognized lecturer on nutrition and food safety issues. He has been invited to lecture at countless universities, medical schools and conferences around the world, including the 2004 Conference on World Affairs. Dr. Greger is a graduate of the Cornell University School of Agriculture and the Tufts University School of Medicine." http://www.atkinsexposed.org/atkins/19/About_Us.htm The odd thing is that Dr. Greger makes no mention of his vegetarian/vegan beliefs on atkinsexposed.org. He simply attacks the two leading LC diets, Atkins and South Beach, without offering an alternative. The alternative might be on offer in his newsletter, but based on his other publications, could be assumed to be vegetarian in nature, probably along the Ornish solution. I'm not going to say that that simply won't work, but it will not work as fast for as many people and produce as many good results as a carbohydrate restricted intervention teamed with a balanced level of protein and carbohydrates in maintenance. The research is fairly abundant on this. Lastly, with each passing week, there is more support for a carbohydrate restricted lifestyle from the research community. This week, check the scathing rip fest of the American Diabetic Association in Men's Health. And this is a publication that recommends fat/caloric restriction towards health. In short, the people behind your site have an unbalanced, possibly unhealthy agenda and will likely stop at nothing to promote it and eliminate alternatives that may be better. wrote: It's interesting and disturbing what other medical professionals think of the diet. Your opinions please: http://www.atkinsexposed.org/ It's interesting to read the section on the website called "Long Term Side Effects". The website manages to associate features of the Atkins diet with many of the medical problems that show up with aging. Ketosis in particular gets linked to poisonous effects. [Yes, an alternative is presented - a "healthy" vegetarian diet.] Do read both the advocates and the detractors of a way of eating - that will keep one better informed. The website says that weight loss is almost certainly caused by fewer calories, which "since on Atkins so many foods are taboo, people end up eating less"; and more generally: "the carbohydrate content of the diet seemed in no way correlated with weight loss". Also, the website disputes the diet's claimed carbohydrate--insulin relation by quoting from a study: "consistent pattern of higher fasting insulin levels with intake of high-fat, low-carbohydrate diets". In my opinion, the evaluation of how the foods eaten affect one's body is an individual's responsibility. It seems to me that if a particular action, followed up in 1000 subjects, might be shown to have resulted in the catastrophic deterioration of least one of them, no medical professional would dare to recommend that action to a general population, no matter what its benefit to the other subjects. Make up your own mind, even if others reason differently. mikus |

Or at least it would be if they were honest and coming at it from a neutral corner. I think I left it in a way that could leave it open for interpretation, with the most logical, simplest explanation that someone is monkeying with the truth. Yes, and I'm not willing to give the skunk the benefit of the doubt. -Hollywood, suggesting your arrival at the right conclusion proves it was phrased well afterall. |
