Default Reached my goal

I have reached my goal and will now gradually move back to my regular
diet but keep a watch on my carbs. Has anyone had experience going
back to a diet with say 50-70 carbs a day? Do you have a large 10
lbs gain or is it a small weight gain? (3-5 lbs).

Thanks

Congrats on reaching your goal! Since you plan to add in the
carbs gradually anyway, maybe you can see when you start putting
on weight and then reduce them a bit when that happens.

I'm still in OWL, so I can't help you out, but I'd like to congratulate you
on a terrific job. You must be thrilled!

I reached mine a week or so ago and for the past month had gradually moved
my carb intake up to about 60 to 100 per day. I was expecting to see a 5 lb
water weight gain but have actually lost an additional pound. Everyone is
going to be different, but you have the rest of your life to experiment and
see what works for you.

Congrats on your accomplishment!!

I can eat between between 75 - 100 carbs per day without gaining any water
weight. I do try to eat under 75 per day, though.

Congrats.. Don't get too worried if you start putting back on some
weight though..you may have lost up to five pounds of water when you
started this WOL, and it's natural for that to come back..

Default Reached my goal

Pete,

I've lost quite a few extra pounds after hitting my original goal and
boosting carbs to the 50 - 70 gram level you cite. My original goal was 145
which I hit back in the spring. Here it is October and I'm bouncing around
between 137 and 140 (depending mostly on my salt intake, hormone status, and
calorie intake.)

For me calories seem to be most important in maintaining. The higher the
carbs, the more important it is to watch the calories. Without the 30 lbs
I've lost, my body needs a lot less food to maintain than it did when I
weighed in the 160s. I'm in my 50s so my metabolism has slowed naturally
too. If you are younger, (and since you are male) you might be able to boost
carbs and calories cautiously and get away with it.

However, what I have found in the past (and that is a past that included
maintaining a significant weight loss for many years) is that typically what
happens with maintenance is you start out golden, but calorie creep (or carb
creep if you're low carbing ) sets in after a while to where eventually you
are eating just enough to start packing the weight back on.

In the past, I always weighed myself every day set a weight at which point
I'd have to go back on whatever diet worked for me. It was usually 5 to 10
lbs away from the original goal. Now it is 3 lbs since it takes me a much
longer time to lose a pound at this stage of my life than it did when I was
in my 30s.

If you gain more than 10 lbs over your goal and don't correct the
calorie/carb creep it gets much, much harder, psychologically to take the
weight off--especially if you've gotten used to eating off plan stuff all
the times. With that in mind, I'd recommend monitoring what you eat even
though you are in maintenance to make sure you don't start eating another 60
gms and 500 calories a day. If you do, you will regain the weight.

Re regain when boosting carbs: I always gain 2 - 3 lbs when I come up from a
level under 40 grams a day, but that is water and it flushes right out if I
go back down. Other people report that they don't see that water weight
regain until they hit a higher carb level.

However, now that I'm in maintenance I include that water weight in my goal
weight because I personally feel a whole lot better with some glycogen in my
muscles and liver. It keeps me from hypoglycemic blood sugar swings, but I
have major blood sugar issues that not everyone has to worry about.

Expect roughly 5 pounds of water-weight gain when going out of ketosis.

I range about 40g to 80g on maintenance, with occasional days higher
than that.
