When you're out in the world...and you see a seriously over-weight
person....is it all you can do to NOT run over to them and say, "Hey!
Have you heard about the Atkins diet?"

I feel so badly for them because I know how miserable I've been and how hard
the simplest of tasks can be...I want to tell them that there IS an answer.
I thought for so many years that there would never be one for me and of
course I project my own pain onto them and want so badly to help. Of
course, it will only stay a fantasy - "help" of that sort isn't usually
welcomed - it wouldn't have been by me either. So many of us understand all
too well - which is a long way to say that the thought crosses my mind every
single time.

Let's say for the sake of argument that Laureen will indeed reach her
goal of 180 pounds. Having started at 410 pounds, she will of necessity
be in the neighborhood of 300 pounds at some point before reaching her
goal, unless she has an unprecedented 100+ pound whoosh overnight. Her
weight right now is nothing to be sad about, because it is one of the
numbers on the way down that she must pass through before reaching goal.
It would be sad if she stayed at that weight or gained, but I don't see
any evidence of that happening yet.

Anyone that can lose 100 lbs should not be sad! I am proud of her.

some days I concider it but then I would be so dissapointed if it did
not work.. Other days I just consider a do it yourself tummy tuck... I have
access to some tylenol and Ibuprofen.. that would numb the pain right? Oh
where you being a smart ass? I could not tell.

How come? The reality is that we don't know yet whether she will or she
won't. The point is, it makes no sense to lose 100 pounds, still be
losing, and be sad that you haven't lost it all yet. We're all in a
continuous state of self-improvement, and choosing to be sad just
because you're not done yet is ridiculous and unhealthy. If you feel
that way about yourself and your yet unmet goals, then I am sad for you.

Hmm. What if it was a 300 pound person who is still steadily losing and
used to weigh 400 or 500 pounds? What exactly is "not working" about
that? Oh, right, because in JC's universe, you have to lose all of it
before it's working, because there's only points A and Z and you can
just skip the rest of the alphabet.

Beside all that, if one of you fat asses came up to me with diet advice (I
don't care if I weighed 500 pounds), I would have to mention that it sure
doesn't look like it's working for you. Now if you were somewhat svelte,
and I knew that you had once been a lardass, then I might listen to you.

No, it's not just you....... ;-)

I resist it tho' because odds are, they have already heard about it and
discounted it. I've discussed it with a couple of the 300 lb. plus
nurses at work.

They tried it and just can't bring themselves to give up starches such
as pasta and bread.

Some people just can't help themselves!

You obviously couldn't tell that I was questioning your pride in Laureen's
achievement of losing 100 pounds through surgery. Would you really take
more pride in going that route rather than just stuffing a little less ice
cream in your pie hole?

After much time and effort I have come to understand that the idea of
stepping into someone's life and making them slim is utterly futile. In
that context, the parade of fat people I see is an ugly spectacle.

Sometimes I see a young person starting to pudge up, and think what a porker
they will be in a few years.

I'm shifting from pity to resentment. Each new fat person is just another
thick skulled victim determined to follow the crowd over the cliff.

Things are not getting better. They are getting worse.

When I marvel at a slim healthy looking person, I find they are not a low
carber. They are a gawd damn vegan.

Of course. I don't think you do. You act as if low-probability and
impossibility are the same thing. You do not know for a fact that
Laureen, or anyone else, won't reach their goal, but you act like you
do.

Let's say, again for the sake of argument, that you're right. That the
probability is that Laureen, that any one of us, won't reach their goal
weight. In what way does your treating this as if it were a foregone
conclusion help anything? Is it just so you can say "told you so?"* Is
that how you live your life, betting that the worst will happen just so
you can be right?

And what if we all took your position and said to ourselves "The
likelihood that I'll ever reach my goal weight is so low that I should
just give up now." You tell people to give up all the time. Why do you
do that? Giving up just makes it certain they won't lose weight. Is
that why you do it, so you can have another "success" on your books and
you can say "told you so?"
