Default I Read the Book

OK---the book was received and read cover to cover. Or, cassette to
cassette, as the case may be.

The big thing I learned was I dont HAVE to keep adding five carbs a
day/per week until I reach 50 or 60 or whatever my personal magic number
is. I guess I was under the impression one NEEDS to consume as many
carbs in veggies and nuts and so on as can be tolerated for health
reasons.

I was wondering how I was gonna cram THAT many veggies in as veggies
arent much my thing, anyway. The only veggie dish Im crazy about happens
to be salad---with a good mix of field greens, some orange or red
peppers for vitamin C (since I hate all fruits, especially citrus) and a
sprinkle of sunflower seeds. It's great t know I dont HAVE to eat more
veggies that I dont even want JUST to get up to a certain number of
carbs. I CAN get the extra carbs by adding more to my salad---a bit of
tomato, a bit of avocado, some sprouts, and so on.

This probably isnt a big deal to veggie lovers---but I was sort of
dreading having to sit down to yellow squash, zuccini, eggplant....yech.
Spincah is great---and again, I can add it raw to my salads.

What's funny is, I have said a gazillion times, "I could live on good
salads and meat," meaning I could live forever without missing most
cooked veggies. What a relief to learn I CAN create extravagant salads
to fill my carb needs, without "forcing" cooked veggies.

I DO like asparagus, Brussels sprouts and cabbage, tho....so, it looks
like a more or less perfect arrangement for Life.

I especially took heed to Atkins warnings about the danger of EVER
tempting fate with a piece of sugary desert or white flour
products---Why wake the seeping dragon if you KNOW you're addicted? I
understand that some folks CAN...but Im not one of them, LOL. Im
confident that for me, saying, "This one piece of cake wont get me
started...." would be like a reformed crack addict thinking, "Just this
one little bowl wont hurt me."

Ive HAD the experience of thinking, "This ONE cigarette wont get me
started smoking agan." Yeah....right. I bought a pack on the way
home....and a carton before the week was out----AFTER three years of NON
smoking.

ONE was all it took. OK---I GET it. For me, forever, NO sugar, NO white
flour. They are poison to me.

I had not realized DANDR was available on audio cassette. Does Atkins
himself do the narration?

I agree that carbing up is dangerous. It took me 6 weeks to break the carb
cravings, and I don't want to risk triggering their return.

Cubit---I dont know whether Atkins puts out a taped version. I get my
books on tape from the Library for the Blind, where every popular book
is recorded within a year of it's publication, usually. They have a
staff of professional readers-- LOL, in fact, one thing I dearly love
is, in many cases, if the author is English, the reader will be English.
If the author is a female, the reader will be female. Some of the
readers switch accents to match the character 'speaking". It's
wonderful!
I "read" an Anne Rice book tha had characters from Scotland, France,
Louisianna and the Carribbean---and the female reader did ALL the
accents, beautifully.

Was it the entire book on cassette? I originally got the two
cassette set and it was a small abbreviation of the entire
book. Wonderfull starting point but I still needed to read
the book to get the rest of the plan.

The big thing I learned was I dont HAVE to keep adding five carbs a

Moving on the OWL is still the standard plan and the
standard plan is still the result of decades of work
on the part of Dr A to gt the very best results the
most often.

He gives permission to stay low, and there are no
health risks as long as you do follow all of the
rules for Induction (Go to some anti-Atkins sites
and you will see folks who managed to make themselves
sick staying low. None followed the actual rules for
Induction). Do not imagine that "no health risks"
equals "optimal loss for the most people". Go ahead
and try staying low if you want, but the very first
thing to think of at every turn is moving on to the
rest of the standard plan.

Extending Induction is a variation on the process.
It's an authorized variation so there's no health
risk. But the entire process was designed to give
the best loss for the most people. Ask yourself -
Knowing that the entire plan is designed for the
best loss, exactly why are you deviating from the
entire process?

I was wondering how I was gonna cram THAT many veggies in

Follow the carb ladder and it will be different
veggies rather than more. You can get up to over
40 by eating an entire head of cauliflower, or you
can use the carb ladder and get their with sensible
portions of items not on the Induction list.

as veggies arent much my thing, anyway.

Whew! Good thing the world works by magic because
I happen to have a "blessed wand of adulthood (8)"
in my hand. Zap! And bingo you magically don't
have problems with veggies any more.

The only veggie dish Im crazy about happens
to be salad---with a good mix of field greens,
some orange or red peppers for vitamin C

Flippancy aside you aren't in all that bad a
situation. Those *are* veggies. Do take it on
faith that you like more veggies than you think.
Do some afirmations about looking forward to
yummy colorful veggies if that's what it takes.
Cook them less so they are more crisp and better
tasting - some dislike veggies that have been
reduced to mush but when they are done right the
problem goes away.

Children don't like veggies. Adults do like
veggies. If that works to help you through the
process, use it. if there's some other mental
mechanism that will work for you, use that one.
But be clear that disliking veggies is a mental
hurdle inside your mid.

(since I hate all fruits, especially citrus)

"All fruits" says mental block. A couple of
specific fruits says you have a more specific
dislike. I dislike parsnips and bell peppers
and I like basically all other fruits and veggies
(at least I'm neutral or better about them all).
So the "especially citrus" part doesn't strike me
as a mental block issue.

It's great t know I dont HAVE to eat more
veggies that I dont even want JUST to get up to a certain number of
carbs.

More or different veggies. See the carb ladder for
what to add when. Week three, more of the same.

I CAN get the extra carbs by adding more to my salad---a bit of
tomato, a bit of avocado, some sprouts, and so on.

That is an excellent way to get from 20 to 25 for
week three. Good job.

What's funny is, I have said a gazillion times, "I could live on good
salads and meat," meaning I could live forever without missing most
cooked veggies. What a relief to learn I CAN create extravagant salads
to fill my carb needs, without "forcing" cooked veggies.

Forcing is the key. Don't force. Battle your own
mind and you will fail. Work with your own mind to
change this block. And don't boil those veggies into
submission, pan fry them with oil and garlic only
until they are crispy.

I DO like asparagus, Brussels sprouts and cabbage, tho....so, it looks
like a more or less perfect arrangement for Life.

Those are core veggies, so I'm not sure what your
problems with veggies are. Work on the other types,
take your time. Try it with an open mind and you
will discover you like many more types than you expect.
And don't be surprised at a couple of strong dislikes.

A point of Atkins is to add foods back in one by one,
and to do so in a specific order based on risk. One
at a time so if you get problems you knowwhat did it.
Lower risk then higher risk so you build confidence
steadily.

At some point you're supposed to add back in everything
but the highest risk ones. Along the way you are likely
to hit a trigger food. Consider this a *victory* not
a *defeat*. Sure, you'll need to retreat to Induction
for a few days and all that. But since you were adding
one food at a time you learned what triggered it.
Knowledge is power. Knowing your trigger foods gives
you exact knowledge of what to avoid forever. Right now
you're guessing it was the cake. Good guess but not a
sure thing. Was it the sugar in the frosting, the wheat
in the cake, or some of the other ingredients.

Ive HAD the experience of thinking, "This ONE cigarette wont get me
started smoking agan." Yeah....right. I bought a pack on the way
home....and a carton before the week was out----AFTER three years of NON
smoking.

ONE was all it took. OK---I GET it. For me, forever, NO sugar, NO white

Labelling trigger foods poison is a most excellent idea.
But checking them one by one to know which is and which
isn't is an even better idea. Especially if you wait to do
that check until you are well into the plan, you've lost
plenty, you are nice and secure in the process. Atkins
strarts out strict and gets gradually less so. Except
that once you've found what your personal poisons are
you will have to be strict with them. For some their
poisions are anything above some carb level or glycemic
index; for others their poisons are specific ingredients.

Cool : ) I used to read for the RBPB equivalent in England, a bunch of us
used to in college. We never managed that degree of sophistication, though!

You can get up to over

Not this year in sunny England - caulis are teeny, half a head pureed is a
tablespoon serve each for my daughter and I!

It's amazed me how many veggies I was sure I hated, I in fact love - spinach
being a prime contender, I eat spinach raw or cooked nearly every day now! I
only "discovered" asparagus this season, fantastic! I want some more to try
on my new griddle, and it's already getting hard to find : ( I used to hate
kale, too, and am slurping it up in kale-and-seaweed soup : ) I found some
dried seaweed in a health-food store, and it tases great reconstituted!

I'm trying to up the carbs a bit without rocking the blood glucose boat, see
if I've stalled myself by staying too low.

I have been attempting to expand my veggies list for years.. despite this I
still hate mushrooms, zuccini and fried squash.. mashed with butter isnt so
bad. Spinach is still out after many attempts to like it and so is canned
asparrugus.. frozen is not too bad

There's a lot of stuff I thought I hated but it turned out I hated them the
way DH likes them. He likes canned asparagus, I tried it and it was slimy
and gross. Then we went to a steak dinner at his work and they served some
grilled fresh asparagus, it was good.
