The problem with this website is that it doesn't pay any attention to body
composition at all. BMI is merely a fairly poor statistical proxy for
Body Fat Percentage. There's no point in telling someone to weigh 130
without discussing 130 pounds of WHAT.

I currently have LBM of 133 pounds. Which limb should I chop off to get
my weight down to 130 pounds?

I can run a mile at 11 1/2 minutes, bench press 1/2 my body weight and I'm
wearing a size 14. Me at 180 is a whole lot different than a butterball
couch potato at 180.

True. The BMI "works" for the person with average body composition.
For health, Dr. Cooper says being fit is more important than body
weight. Also, for those who have excess fat, the distribution of it
is important. The "apple shape" - or "central obesity" is associated
with heart disease. The "pear shape" distribution of fat is
considered more benign.

Actually, I said I had LBM of 133. That stands for Lean Body Mass, which
means that my bones, muscle, skin and other organs add up to 133 pounds
and the rest of me is fat. (I have about 56 pounds of fat. That's just
under 30% bodyfat.)

A healthy body fat for me would be 23%, which means I need to lose
anouther 15 pounds of fat or so. But it wouldn't do me any good to lose
muscle, since muscle is metabolically active and burns calories and it's
awfully useful to be strong. It wouldn't do me any good to have a smaller
liver or less dense bones, either. So when it comes right down to it, the
ONLY number I want to reduce is my body fat. The rest of my weight I want
to keep.

I'm 5'6", age 39 and wear a size 16 pants and weigh nearly 60 pounds more
than you. But without knowing more about you I can honestly say that I
might be in better shape and/or health than you. Being 130 isn't the best
idea if you've only got 90 pounds of lean body mass. Covert Bailey refers
to that as "skinny fat".

Welcome to the newsgroup. I've learned so much here!

That is remarkable! Did you do a lot of lifting to get there?

But w/ regard to "skinny fat"--me too!?! I don't know my lean body
mass, but I have to guess it is not a whole truckload more than 90
because I am right now wearing size 12 or 14 pants/blouses, a 14
swimsuit.

Only 49 years old (thus not elderly), 5'4-1/2", and 140 pounds.

I lost a lot more than weight ...

Tina,
What are the 4 numbers in your sig? I'm aware of the 3 but not 4.

What type of exercise do you do? It's probably one of the most important
parts of any weight loss program to prevent the loss of lean body mass.
I'm 60 and recently started working out at Curves. My others forms of
exercise are mainly walking and bike riding. Last time I weighed and
measured I had gained 1/4 pound but loss 1.2% bodyfat. This means I'm
saving my LBM and losing fat. I'm nearing my weight goal but have quite a
way to go on the desired BF%. I really feel the weight workouts are the
main contributor to saving the LBM.

Yes, I do rather a lot of weight-lifting. For the past 14 months or so
I've been doing a program called "Body for Life" where I lift heavy
weights three times a week for about 45 minutes each time. I generally do
"olympic lifts" like bench press and squats and deadlifts. I vary the
routine though and use dumbbells and Nautilus equipment from time to time.

But even before I started this fairly serious weight-lifting regimen I had
a long history of using resistance machines. In high school I was an
athlete and would work out in the weight room (I had to go through the
boy's lockerroom to get to it). In college I did some sort of
hydroresistance thing where you set a dial to the level of resistance you
wanted - sort of like Curves only 20 years earlier. As a young woman I
did Nautilus two or three times a week. But then I stopped going to a gym
for 6 years while I had little kids and got in really bad shape.

In any case, my teen-age-hood as a three-season athlete and my long
history of working out regularly (with occasional multi-year gaps) has
left me with dense bones and lots of muscle.

All that means is that I should pay attention to the fat percentage MUCH
more than the weight. But I think that's true for anyone. Whenever
anyone says what they weigh I ALWAYS wonder, "pounds of what?"

Another set of statistics: I'm 55 years old, 5' 5", weigh 176, and
wear size 12 or 14 (even a couple of 10s lately) -- so, I'm about
Tina's size, at 36 lbs. more. I do pretty serious weight training,
and have for the past 4-5 years (well before I started trying to lose
weight). I haven't had a BF% test recently, but I expect I have a
pretty good amount of lean body mass for someone my weight. (Last
time I had it tested, I weighed around 212 and had around 150 lbs. of
lean mass. I'm sure it has gone down some, though, with the
additional weight loss.)
