LOW-CARB DIET

What is so good about a low-carb diet? I think it is particularly effective if your body doesn't react well to sugars. That can be the early (not really detected by doctors) signs of diabetes/syndrome X. Not to mention our entire food industry in swimming in sugars. The best part for me is keeping carbs low, keeps your glycogen stores low. WHenever I fall off the wagon I gain weight quickly (pounds a day) because I believe the glycogen stores are re-stocking. With one molecule of sugar to four molecules of water, the glycogen stores puts a lot of water weight on per sugar. Once I get back on track, that weight melts off quickly. So it's like I have a buffer against permanently weight gain. DiGiTAL_ViNYL (no email) 350/288/225 month-start: 292 monthly-goal: 8 since: 12/01/2004 Low Carb started Jan 12, 2004. |

What is so good about a low-carb diet? 1) I had tried losing weight on other diets, and not much happened. 2) I lost over 60 lbs on the diet 3 years ago 3) I have managed to keep most of the weight off 4) I feel better, and have more strength and fun in life Any special reason why you are asking? Somebody might be able to actually answer what your real questions or concerns are. Jim |

LOW-CARB DIET

What is so good about a low-carb diet? 1- It works. 2- It works faster than the major alternatives. 3- It's actually not that hard. You count one or two numbers (carbs, protein if you do Protein Power) 4- You get to eat steak. If you want to. 5- You can be a vegetarian and do it. 6- Olive Oil. Butter. Bacon. Eggs. Cream. Brie. Cheese. 7- People on LCDs (heh) eat more veggies than population at large (4 serves a day on average). 8- A smug sense of knowing better than the average fob. Or US Government, the American Diabetic advocacy group, or your average GP doctor. 9- I'm pretty sure I mentioned it works and it works faster than the alternatives, at least in the early go. 10- Reducing medications. 11- Eliminating medications. 12- Lowering blood pressure. 13- Improving cholesterol. (Did I mention you eat steak and brie while doing so?) 14- The community. 15- Lose fat, build muscle, scale moves, figure improves. Hard/ impossible on any other plan. 16- Fruit. Yes, it's a part of a LC diet. So are veggies. I could go on. I'm sure people could double or triple this list. But that's a lot of the major stuff. In short, you can improve your health, drastically, while eating a lot of great foods. Read Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution or Protein Power Life Plan. They lay out the benefits at greater length. |

LOW-CARB DIET

What is so good about a low-carb diet? It works. You don't have to starve yourself. You can eat lots of tasty, healthy, natural, filling food that most people see as a guilty pleasure, if not an outright sin. It often has other happy side-effects which kick in before the weight is even lost: improved cholesterol numbers, elimination of heartburn or acid reflex, control or prevention of diabetic complications, more energy, less or no acne, less tooth decay, and stabler emotional outlook. I've seen all those benefits in myself except perhaps the first one, and I might be able to count that one too if I'd ever had my cholesterol checked. But for example: when eating a typical, USDA-recommended high-carb diet, I got acid reflux so bad it'd often wake me up at night. On low-carb, I have no acid reflux, no indigestion, no heartburn, NONE. And that happens to me within a few days of starting the diet. -- Aaron -- 285/254/200 -- aaron.baugher.biz |

Yes, it's a part of a LC diet. Not really. Depends on how low you consider low. Strawberries, blackberries and raspberries range from 12-15g per cup. Blueberries are higher at 22g/cup, so portions might need to be smaller. Watermelon, cantalope and honeydew balls range from 12-16g per cup. A whole kiwifruit is 14g; a large peach is 17g. In the summer, I eat fruit and still stay at 50-60g carb/day. People who eat double or triple the carbs I do are low-carbing and could fit in a lot more fruit than I do. Fruit isn't unlimited by any means, portions need to be controlled. And some fruits are much carbier than others. But fruit can definetly fit into most low-carb diets. Fruit carbs are fructose which goes directly towards refilling liver glycogen, which is not a good idea when trying to lose weight on low carb. Definitely. |
