Default help / home made candy / breath mints

The members of this group have been very helpful to me in the past,
which is why I came back.

Some of you have posted regarding home made candy recipes. I'm
seeking a possible recipe for home made breath mints. I have food
allergies and cannot use store brand candy anymore. I thought perhaps
a strong, home made peppermint would work, but I'd appreciate any
ideas the group may have.

I'd appreciate any ideas.

Thanks.

Thomas,

If you are using breath mints to try to mask "diet breath" you would do a
lot better to eliminate the bad breath problem.

For me the solution was surprisingly simple: cut my protein down to only
the level my body needed to repair muscle and supply the small amount of
additional carbohydrate needed to run my brain. When I did this, bad breath
vanished.

If the problem is onions and garlic, try using a product called "Breath
assure" which are little capsules of parsley oil.

If the the problem is gum disease, get effective treatment from a dentist,
since it turns out gum disease can lead to significantly elevated blood
sugars and defeat weight loss--to say nothing about making it more likely
you'll have a heart attack.

Everything that can be done physiologically has already been done.

I am going to need some kind of breath freshener for social siutations
(and Breath Assure isn't a choice for me -- I'm allergic to some of
the ingredients in the product).

Again, if anyone in the group has ideas for me, I'd be grateful.

Thanks.

just use whatever sugar-free mints you like. count the calories, count
the carbs, get on with your day.

it's not that big a deal.

There's been a misunderstanding, and I'm still hoping that someone in
the group can help me with this.

There are NO commercially available breath mints that I can use,
because of my allergies. I need to make my own. Here's the
problem... I NEED a recipe.

Does anyone in the group have a recipe for homemade mints or other
candy that might work as a substitute for Certs or Tic Tacs?

So far, this is proving to be a tough find.

what is it that you're allergic to? perhaps it would be easier to help
you find a recipe if we knew what ingredients you were trying to avoid.

It might actually be easier to tell what I can use (my allergies are
compliacted.

I have no problems with granulated sugar (but I cannot use
confectioner's sugar). Milk, flour, natural oils like cinnamon or
peppermint are fine, and I have no intolerances to dairy products.

If I could just find an old-style recipe for hard candy I could make
this work. Unofrtunately, I can seem to find such a recipe (75 years
ago, this would have been an easy item to come by).

Thanks for your reply.

there are some hard candy recipes he

http://www.recipesource.com/desserts.../indexall.html

but they use corn syrup, and i have to wonder if a corn allergy is the
reason you can't use confectioners' sugar.

i don't know what you could sub for corn syrup if that's the case, but
it's a place to start. you might also try submitting a request to
rec.food.recipes.
