Default Status of your general day-to-day health?

Could those of you with more experience and time at LC eating, post some
anecdotal replies about your general health since you started?

With winter coming on, I'm looking for info about: colds, flu's, allergies,
infections, and so on. I'd list more, but I'm not sure what would be
apropos.

TIA,
DustyB

Dusty,

Not much you can do to prevent a viral attack except to wash your hands
quite often. The fastest way to catch a cold is to shake someone's hand
(with a cold virus), then scratch that itching eye or nose, or touch your
gums, lips, teeth. Attach that virus to your mucus membranes then ......
Protein, which your intake should be higher by default on a LC eating plan,
increases the immune systems strength to fight off bacterial infections.
With careful handwashing and proper protein intake, you should sail through
the winter months.

Hi DustyB,

I've been LCing since May, have not been sick (other than an
occasional headache if I go too long between meals). I've been
wondering how I'll fare thru the dreaded cold/flu season, also. The
thing I love about this new WOE is that when I get up in the
morning...I'm awake!! I know that sounds odd, but I am a bona fide
"non-morning person", or so I always thought. But since LC diet, I
get up much earlier and can actually function right away. Who would
have thunk? (Yes, JC, I know it's "thought"! grin)

I have been low carbing for about 14 months. I started the diet
because I had a kidney transplant (kidney disease -
glomerulonephritis) and gained 50 pounds from the steroids I was given
for anti-rejection. Also, my blood sugar was out of control from the
drugs (bg problems due to pancreas damage from gallbladder disease). I
have had one cold, and one respiratory thing (doc didn't have a name
for it), in the last 3 years since the transplant. The respiratory
thing was last Spring. I get a flu shot each year, and I had pneumonia
shot a couple of years ago.

Actually, low carb should strengthen your immune system. Sugar feeds
bacteria and fungi that can cause illness.

I'm taking powerful immunosuppressants and I'm just fine. I have a
complete set of blood tests run every month to check the status of my
transplant and everything is utterly normal.

You have nothing to worry about.

BTW, I stopped the steroids and lost 35 of the 50 pounds I had gained.
The last 15 pounds are giving me fits, but my bg's are now excellent.

Best,

Mary Sue

I haven't had an asthma attack since Jan 2003. My breathing is so much
better, I've had compliments on how healthy I look. I still have some
seasonal allergies but I don't have to take my allergy pill 2/day anymore.

I'm a long-time LCer and my experience is that when eating a strict LC
plan I've been less effected my colds and flues. Its not that LC
prevents catching all the 'bugs' but the symptoms have less of an
impact. For me, its because my sinuses have been much clearer and
healthier from eliminating gluten and most dairy.

The times I've gotten a cold and stayed LC the cold seemed to last
only 2-3 days and didn't impact me to any great degree. The times
I've not been LC, or went off LC at the onset of a cold, the symptoms
were much stronger.

I have seen an amazing improvement in overall health. Only one cold in
the year and couple months I've been on LC - and a very minor one. Used
to have chronic ear/bronchial infections. I've strained a few muscles,
but then, I'm still a big woman, doing a fair amount of exercise (except
for the past two weeks and the upcoming one, and then it's back on the
cardio plan, believe me!)

No more reflux, no more heart palps.

The only thing I've noticed that's a negative, if it's that, is that my
psoriasis really hasn't improved - but I didn't think it would, as it's
not related to weight or eating. It got better this summer after
extended exposure to natural sunlight, though - something I wouldn't
have had prior, because I wouldn't have gotten outside in my shorts and
skimpy tee-shirt to sun. There you have it.

I've noticed a similar effect...
If I am strict with my LC when I start feeling the onset of a
flu/cold.. I don't seem to be as dragged out and it passes more
quickly.

harrumph ...

Since I shacked up with my sweetie I've gone from 1 cold a year in a bad
year to 2-3 every winter ...

My hand washing habits haven't changed, but how do you stop some bugger from
coughing in your face in their sleep?!

At least he didn't manage to give me the flu when he had it last year. I
guess 'cause it didn't involve coughing.

Hi DustyB,

I've been lowcarbing for over 3 years now (I'm now 30 yrs old). I'm not a
strict lowcarber as some people are here, but try to just eat right
(low-carb) on a daily basis. I started off lowcarbing very seriously and
after about 6-12 months I understood a lot better how my body worked and
what foods affected me in different ways. With that knowledge, I can now
look at a food and almost give you a nutritional breakdown on it :-) Also,
I've had periods of exercising a lot, and periods of not exercising for over
6 months - doesn't make any difference.

However in that time I have had one case of getting the flu. And that was
basically overnight - (i.e. got flu-like symptoms in the afternoon and it
was gone by the next day). I used to get the flu all the time - probably
3-6 times a year.

I have three theories on why I have not had the flu much in the last couple
of years.
1) Low-Carb has boosted my immunity so high I just can't get sick!
2) I used to have the flu that many times that I've had them all already :-)
3) My job is particularly stressful and I like to work hard - so I don't
have time for the flu (not as silly as it sounds).

Personally, I put it down to Low-Carb. I don't know many people who have
stuck with low-carb as long as I have, most of them give up after a few
months stating some silly reason or another. I just keep on low-carbing and
feeling good.

Hope this helps.
