Default Scales advice needed

I'm thinking seriously of dropping my WW meetings, buying a good set of
scales & going it alone with the help of you all. This winter I'm not
looking forward to driving 40 miles round trip through fog and slick roads
to go to meetings. We sit down in a 'hole' close to the Snake River & get
much much fog and black ice in the winter time. It also irks me that I have
to pay for meetings that I can't get to.

So - - what brand of scales have you bought & what do you like or not like
about them? I looked at Walmart today. They had Taylor and HealthOMeter -
two or three models of each brand. Any suggestions?

I've had a Tanita for a few years now. It is a combined scale and
percentage-bodyfat unit and it can store more than one person's data.
You need to establish some info/data (sex/age?) for the %fat
calculations.

I believe that the scale is very accurate. It appears to track the WW
scale pretty closely. As for the body fat calculations, I don't know
how accurate it is but it has shown, I believe, a good relative value
over the last year that I have been on WW.

A few months ago, they were offering it as a closeout on
www.tanita.com for a good price.

I bought a basic one - dial goes around, non-digital, non-body fat
calculating. My only complaint is they made the dial too small to read! I'm
asking Santa for one that has bigger numbers.

Hi Donna.

Don't get the health o meter. I had them and they were all over the place.
I recommend the Tanita brand. They sell them at Bath Bed and Beyond. They
weigh to within .2 of a pound and are very accurate and consistent.

Buy one with big numbers.
None of them are very accurate in absolute terms, but you can track
changes pretty well with almost any scale.
Unless you want an expensive one 'cos it looks better, get a cheap one
that shows the same weight when you get on three times.

I bought a HealthOMeter digital scale at KMart not too long ago. I
calibrated it to my Curves WI and they are relatively close. Buy the scale
before you quit the WW meetings. Weigh yourself at home just before/after
the meeting so that you can compare it to the WW weight.

I surely agree with the big numbers advice! I have to put my glasses on to
see the dial on the scales we have now (that my DH bought at a yard sale a
few years ago for $1!!!!!).

Hi Donna,

If you want to stick to WW then you can get their "at home" kit as I did.
It's a little $$$$ but it includes envelopes you send in each week with
your weight, all the books you get at the meetings and online support if you
need it. I am doing that and hanging out in here and so far i'm down from
92kg to 85.7kg (and that was my week 3 weigh in). I have family support
which is cool ...

As for scales i'm probably no help as I live in Aus but I bought an
expensive electric set with big numbers that measures in 100g increments so
I can see all small gains/losses and would recommend that type as the small
results do help encourage me stick on track!

I find this to be true, too. Mine weights in .2 of a pound and sometimes
I'll be happy to accept that loss!
