Default Going to be starting Atkins

I am brand new to this group. I am currently 22 years old and weigh 298
pounds. I just started the Atkins Diet and am just wondering a few things. I
am going to go all out and cut nearly all carbs out for induction...if not
all. Then, I intend, even after induction to keep carbs to an absolute
minimum. I also plan to excersize daily and keep calories to a minimum..but
not so low that starvation kicks in. While starting all of this, will the
weight come off really fast? And if I keep myself doing this, will the
weight come off faster than if I started eating carbs again? I was just
curious to se what the initial weight loss can be when first starting the
Atkins Diet. Any input would be greatly appriciated. And by the way, my
target goal is about 180 lbs, and I want to do it as fast as possible.
Thanks in advance for any replies.

Hi John, welcome to the group!

It's not a good idea to cut carbs completely (not to mention nearly IMPOSSIBLE).
You NEED vegetables, especially for the fiber (constipation is quite common
during induction). The main purpose of Induction is to change your eating habits
and get your body into ketosis so that it starts burning fat for energy instead
of glycogen. Ketosis is like pregnancy -- you either are or are not in ketosis,
so keeping carbs excessively low serves no purpose once your body has gone into
ketosis.

You WILL most likely lose a lot of SCALE weight in the first couple of weeks.
This is MOSTLY water. Each molecule of glycogen stored in the liver has 4-5
molecules of water bound to it. As the glycogen is used up, the associated water
is shed. Once the glycogen store is depleted, the REAL work of burning FAT
begins. Fat will be lost more slowly. If you lose 1-2 lbs/week, that's a GOOD
thing. Since are a guy (and a young one at that) and because you have a lot to
lose, you may lose faster than some, at least at first, but low-carb is NOT a
miracle weight-loss diet. That's hard to hear and accept when you want to lose
the weight NOW, but it's a fact. The important thing is to LOOK AHEAD STAY THE
COURSE.

Keep reading this newsgroup for more tips and inspiration.

Your best bet is to eat the 20 carbs a day allowed for Induction...you need
those veggies! It's difficult to get enough fiber during Induction, so try
to eat veggies with lots of fiber. Without fiber, (and without BMs), you're
not going to feel very good! Most folks lose weight quickly during
Induction. 20 carbs a day is not very many!

Also, if you're not really following Atkins and eating the allowable carbs,
it will probably be hard to maintain. People can get bored with the food
choices during Induction, which is why we can move on to the next stage of
Atkins after 2 weeks. Keeps us going. Without eating even the 20 allowable
carbs, you could be setting yourself up for failure.

Weight loss during Induction varies for everyone. As you will see in the
Atkins New Diet Revolution book, there is a chart that maps out metabolic
resistance vs. pounds lost during Induction. Give yourself two weeks in
Induction and see what happens! It's just two weeks at 20 carbs a day...

You sound really motivated and gung-ho! Good luck and keep exercising!

Get a copy of Atkins book and follow it. What you are proposing to do
is not Atkins, it's your own diet plan. Atkins doesn't cut all carbs
during induction, nor does it keep calories to a minimum. Why
reinvent something that is so simple already and works so well?

I would strongly advise following Atkins the way it is written. During
induction you should be eating 20 carbs each day. Carbs are in eggs,
cheese, and vegetables. You should be getting most of your carbs from the
allowed veggie list.

After the 2 week induction period, you should INCREASE your carb intake by 5
each week. This is how Atkins works. If you keep your carbs too low, you
may find that you do not lose weight. Keeping carbs too low is not a
shortcut. If you want to speed up weight loss, make sure you add in
exercise. You may feel very crappy the first few days of induction, just
forewarning you, that stage will pass.

My advice is similar to others - EAT YOUR VEG!!! GET A KITCHEN SCALE!!! GO
SWIMMING!!!! EAT FAT BUT NOT TOO MUCH!!

But watch what veg you're eating, e.g. tomatoes and carrots are very carby and
you can't really eat them while you're in induction because you can easily blow
20g on 3 big tomatoes. So get yourself loads of veg. Not eating enough veg (0g
carb) will give you constipation and being desperately constipated is not fun -
you might ended up having to go to the hospital to get yourself unblocked.

Another advice is that you should get a kitchen scale. I wish I have got one
from day 1 but I'm going to get it today, which is almost 2 years after I
started doing low carb (sporadically). To be successful you have to be
meticulous about how much you're actually eating. You don't want to be stuck in
a stall for months like me.

Swimming if you have easy access to a pool - because (1) you're heavy, swimming
is non weight bearing exercise where as running/cycling will damage your knees;
(2) having to bare it all (almost) helps with building up confidence; (3)
swimming takes co-ordination, it's not mindlessly repetitive, in order to swim
better you need to think as you swim so you won't get bored.

Fat - eat too much fat and your body will burning the dietary fat instead of
burning the fat that's padding your body all over as fuel. Which means your
weight loss would be much slower than you'd like otherwise. Eat protein as your
main source of energy.

Lastly, welcome to the group.

that's a bad idea. (hint: the atkins plan includes eating vegetables.
vegetables have carbs.)

Then, I intend, even after induction to keep carbs to an absolute minimum.
I also plan to excersize daily and keep calories to a minimum..but not so

exercise is a good idea. keeping your calories in check is a good idea.

you didn't get fat overnight and you're not going to reverse it
overnight. being impatient is stupid and counterproductive when it
comes to losing weight.

get over it and settle in for the duration. it doesn't matter how long
it takes.

Eating food to excess is somewhat like being on hard drugs.

Changing habits isn't gonna be easy.

It is best to actually get the Atkins book and read the first 12
chapters..... it answers a lot of questions.

Then follow it for several weeks.

I made the mistake of thinking that since I am smart, I could figure out
a way to lose weight fast by slightly following the Atkins plan and
adding my own twists to it.

After almost two months of unsatisfactory results doing it "my way", I
followed the instructions and have had excellent success.

RTFM.

Often the best advice, RTFM.

Jim

Make sure that you eat your low-carb veggies faithfully. Its really
important for the vitamins and fiber.

Then, I intend, even after induction to keep carbs to an absolute
minimum.

You can stay on induction longer than two weeks. But still, don't skip the
veggies.
