I did indeed get tired reading about your day. Whew! I'm exhausted.
Except for not having to take anyone to the hospital (knock on wood),
I'll be doing the same things over the next several days that you
crammed into one day. Not only do I have to get my house ready for
company, I'm having a contractor and a designer coming on Thursday
morning to discuss remodeling my kitchen and bathroom. My house needs
to be put in order by then. More or less.

My brother and sister-in-law are having a new kitchen put in their house on
Thursday.

One day to put in a kitchen? Send me their contractor's name!! My
kitchen needs to be gutted I fear. I have water damage in the ceiling
and the last time the floor, cabinets, and countertops were updated
was before I was born (I'm 50!). So everything's in really bad shape:
ceiling to floor and everything between. Oy.

DON'T DO IT - OY does not even come close!!!!!!!!!

UGH! I can relate. I've lived through a lot of remodeling chores ... kitchen was
by far the worst!

There was a minor bathroom change about 10 years back - just moved the
bathtub about 8 inches and put up a formica surround - well, I paid to
have these things done (G)

hub broke down and paid for the new tub/shower liner and door installation this
past summer - said he was just too danged tired of repairs and remodeling chores.
I'm sure we will also hire someone for the upstairs when we finally get around to
it. Climbing the roof and replacing skylights (or boarding them up) no longer
sounds like fun to him.

I can't remember when I did mine but for 18 years I swore I would
never remodel the kitchen. Then I did and I knew why I swore I would
never remodel my kitchen. I guess it was two, going on three years
ago. When was the Seattle earthquake?

I remember when I did mine, within a year or so. Youngest daughter was 2 years
old, running through the wall (ceiling) supports in her diaper. G There's
nothing like trying to take care of a family when you have no sink, water in
bathroom only, microwave in office and fridge sitting in family room.

Oh, yeah, the fridge in the dining room syndrome (G)

Ah, yes, ceiling damage (there was some) was the last thing that was
driving it but managed to create its own story, including me sawing an
active water pipe in the kitchen ceiling. I had already decided to
replace the ceiling and plumbing but not that NIGHT! (G)

We were lucky, nothing majorly went wrong. I do remember though ... getting the
temporary supports set and making the big step to remove the weight bearing wall
(which was holding our upstairs bedroom in place ... as well as roof). We had a
500 foot beam ready to bring into the house and set in place. The only way to get
it into the house was through the existing window, which would be boarded up
afterwards. Don't know how but hub was able to drag it around the yard, and get
it into the window (after measuring three times before cutting). Shoved the thing
through the window, then yelled at me for not being able to hold my end up! LOL!
He had me wedged into a corner with the thing. He came back in the house, we both
looked at the beam resting on the window frame and the floor and dang near burst
into tears. Both of us swore the thing looked too damn short and no way was going
to do what it was supposed to. sigh We did end up being wrong, it fit like a
glove, but it was a darned scary hour or so while we muscled the thing into place.

I've only done the minor things like putting in the recessed lighting
and ripping out the older stuff. I did install the dishwasher and
sink faucet and disposal but a neighbor did the "background plumbing
for me.

Wanna come and replace my kitchen faucet for me? I've been waiting for months -
always one excuse or another.

The WATER leak was me - I was trying to remove the plaster and lath
below the bathroom plumbing that was to be replaced. I had drawn maps
of the pipes on the kitchen ceiling with twists and turns. I missed
one turn and the SAWS-ALL sawed ALL! I was lucky I was not
electrocuted on the aluminum ladder - the ground fault protector
WORKED.

Oh boy, you were darned lucky! The saws-all is a nice tool, according to hubby -
it gets every job done ... whether you want them done or not. G

BUT! Another remodeling/water story ... the day the entire roof and attic came
off our house (when putting in the second floor). I was getting ready to leave
for my godsons christening ... crew was working away on breaking down the upper
level of the house. Dark clouds were rolling in fast. I yelled and told the guys
to take a break, tarp the house and give it an hour or so to see what happened. I
was told I was a woman and knew nothing, that storm was going the opposite
direction and would miss us. mmmm hmmmm, ok. 10 minutes later water was pouring
from every crevice of our home, and I was running like a madwoman trying to cover
up televisions, beds, furniture, etc. You wouldn't believe the amount of damage
suffered (the insurance company didn't believe it either) ... much of it wasn't
even determined until a year later when it all had sufficiently dried out.

Sheesh. Bad news

But new oak floor, maple cabinets, corian countertops, stainless
dishwasher, recessed lights, then fridge, then this past spring,
stove.

Isn't it heaven when the job is finally completed? Your kitchen is much, much
fancier than mine ... I have regular cheapie formica countertops, but they were
clean and shiny (15 years ago) and HUGE! Finally, cabinet space, countertop space
so I could actually cook ... a permanently installed dishwasher. And lots of
light, thanks to the added tracklighting. I did splurge on the jenair cooktop
though. G

I wanted NO SEAMS. I may have actually lost cabinet space the old
ones were original and went clear to the floor - with no kick space
and also came down to within 12 inches of the counter which was
another reason the countertops were useless besides only being 18
inches in depth.

I wanted no seams in the countertop too, but was too long and had a 90 degree bend
so couldn't avoid one. The installers were good, put the seam right on the angle,
isn't noticeable unless you are searching for it. They weren't so good with the
hole for the sink - missed on the measurements and it is just a fraction of an
inch too big. One of those things that no one knows but me - but it still bugs
me. Your old kitchen sounds like a nightmare. Guess it just shows how spoiled we
are now, as it was probably very functional when it was originally put in.

I do really find it more fun working in it. And the gas range is
PERFECT.

I did also, at the time. Now things are starting to give me trouble again, guess
it isn't surprising after 15 years. I'm thinking the fridge and stove are both
going to poop out at the same time. sigh

I think you could hasten their demise (G)

LOL! The way my luck has been running lately, it wouldn't surprise me. But I'm
cheap and practical - they'll die on their own and I'll wait. My prediction is
that the door will fall off the fridge first. G

What drove the project was the chocolate cheesecake batter. See my
sink was always too shallow and my countertop was only 18 inches deep,
meaning a narrow and shallow sink. I was washing the bowl that had
the chocolate cheesecake batter. It was filled with chocolate water.
I inverted it too quckly and it rebounded - out of the sink and down
my body and all over the floor. EIGHTEEN YEARS of resolve dissolved
under a diluge of chocolate water!!!!!!!!!!

LOL! Nothing as dramatic as that drove me to finally getting the job done. Our
decision was purely based on a non-workable condition. Very small and dark galley
kitchen, no room for more than one person in it and no where for more than 2
people to eat. I had about 3 feet of countertop - period. Ya gotta love older
home. G

1908, here, I think or 1911.

Wow, makes mine sound like a newly built home - think it was built in the 40's.

Go for it but ......... it will be interesting. It is also why I will
never retire - kitchen's cost too much money even when you hold back a
lot.

... and even when you do them yourself. If I recall correctly, the kitchen
planning center drew plans for us - total cost came out around $12,000! Granted,
it would have been done a whole lot faster and much easier than what we went
through - but the expense was much more than we could afford at the time. The
other bad thing about kitchens ... remodeling doesn't last forever. It still
amazes me how fast the time flies - seems like we just did the job and probably
are looking at having to replace appliances in the next few years, and I'm
thinking the countertop also (and there is a heck of a lot of that!).

I don't think I will be here for its next remodel!!!

Me either, but I will definitely be around for the repairs. Stuff has to get done
if we decide to sell in the next few years.

Sounds like when my parents were doing their house, my brother was a baby.
They're still doing renos in their house and he's almost 29!! Their house
was part of an old cookhouse/bunkhouse from a logging camp. Once they got
it towed onto their property, they gutted the inside and put all their own
walls in, in the places they wanted rooms, etc. It originally was two
stories, about 1400 sq feet on each floor, now they have put in a basement
(unfinished, but dad uses it for all his tools, equipment, etc.)

Can't wait to see it once it's done. I'd love a new kitchen, but
we're renting, so it'll be awhile before we get one of those! I'll bet
you're looking forward to the work being done and you being able to use

and
enjoy your new kitchen.

I haven't enjoyed doing anything in my kitchen except get out of it. I
never really connected my disdain for cooking with hating my kitchen,
even though I never used to dislike cooking as much as I have since
moving in here. Hmm.

Today I went to my mother's and put up both her Christmas trees and
then decorated them. After we finished, we went Christmas shopping. I
only need a couple more gifts. That's one job I'll be glad to be done
with. Wrapping is next weekend before my family arrives next Sunday.

I did absolutely nothing yesterday. I was so tired from the day before

that
all I could manage yesterday was baking the sugar cookie dough we made

on
Saturday. I was in bed at 8:30 last night. Early for me, as I'm

usually up
until 11:00 or so anyway.

After everything you did on Saturday, you deserved a day off. Glad you
took it. And got to bed early too. Taking care of yourself and getting
adequate rest helps curb the food cravings. For me anyway.

No, they haven't found out why he was having blood in his urine, but it is
back to normal now, so it's a mystery. He's going for an ultrasound in
about half an hour to see if any kidney stones show up. Dr. figures he may
have some tiny ones that damaged a blood vessel or something and because
he's on a blood thinner for the time being, the bleeding took a while to
stop. There are kidney problems in his family. His mom has polycystic
kidney disease and his brother has had two bad kidney stone attacks. Will
keep you all posted on what they find. I've had enough of him being sick,
hopefully they don't find anything very serious.

I sure can relate, Brenda. My hub showed blood in his urine one single time (that
he could visually detect), but had a malady of other bizarre symptoms that didn't
point to anything in particular. It took 3 years of constant testing, changing
drs., etc. until they finally found out what the problem was (which pointed back
to the blood in the urine). The drs. did keep going back to the blood in the
urine, but only because traces would continually show in lab results - but they
were undetectable visually. Again, I will hope that this is nothing major - maybe
just a bruise or bump or whatever.

Default NYNY week 10 -- Prairie Roots

Still no results, so will probably hear something at some point today.

I sure can relate, Brenda. My hub showed blood in his urine one single

time (that
he could visually detect), but had a malady of other bizarre symptoms that

didn't
point to anything in particular. It took 3 years of constant testing,

changing
drs., etc. until they finally found out what the problem was (which

pointed back
to the blood in the urine). The drs. did keep going back to the blood in

the
urine, but only because traces would continually show in lab results - but

they
were undetectable visually. Again, I will hope that this is nothing

major - maybe
just a bruise or bump or whatever.

No, they haven't found out why he was having blood in his urine, but it

is
back to normal now, so it's a mystery. He's going for an ultrasound in
about half an hour to see if any kidney stones show up. Dr. figures he

may
have some tiny ones that damaged a blood vessel or something and because
he's on a blood thinner for the time being, the bleeding took a while to
stop. There are kidney problems in his family. His mom has polycystic
kidney disease and his brother has had two bad kidney stone attacks.

Will
keep you all posted on what they find. I've had enough of him being

sick,
hopefully they don't find anything very serious.

Dang Brenda, is it ever going to end? Have they found out hubs current

problem
yet? I do hope it turns out to be nothing to be concerned about ...

but
once
again, keep us posted.

You're going to be too busy to eat! That was my day yesterday. I

cleaned
house, mixed up a batch of sugar cookie dough, bundled up DS and my
grandmother, off we went to try to finish up the Christmas shopping

and
groceries. We were out for about 4 hours, but managed to nearly

finish
up.
Came home, brought in the tree, set it up, began to decorate it. Then

I
had
to take DH to emergency at the hospital, blood in his urine. No

infection
in the bladder or kidneys and no pain, so looks like he will be off to
Vancouver for a CT scan to find out where it's coming from, kind of a

worry
after all he's been through the last 6 months. Anyway, back home, ate
delivery chinese food, finished tree, got DS into bed. Found out

we're
having company today, so stayed up until 12:30 am cleaning, scrubbed

outside
of cupboards, tidied counters, picked up toys (lots of them too, we

really
don't need Ho Ho to visit us this year), laundry, swept and washed the
floor, cleaned up my desk (piled with stuff), washed dinner dishes,

etc

You'll be tired just from reading all that I got done yesterday!

It's pouring rain and windy here today, so we're baking the sugar

cookies
and maybe gingerbread men, but we're not going outside if it stay

yucky
like
this!!

In other words, now that I've dumped out the garbage (by unloading
here), I can get back to my regularly scheduled program.

Well, now that we've both dumped the garbage.....
