Default Equality diet day 51 - blood tests back

Just got back my blood tests after 51 days of my Equality diet. My
lipid profile has improved yet again - my total chol is now 145 and my
HDL is 67 for a CHOL/HDLC ratio of 2.2 - as good as marathon runners.
I also got a new test - Hba1c - that measures average blood glucose -
a concern for me - and my number was 5.2% - good, but not stellar.
Ideally Hba1c should be below 5%. Perhaps it will be next time - it
measures avg BG over the last 3 month period. The biggest surprise to
me was my drop in blood pressure - from 127/80 (not too bad) to a
stellar 105/65. I wasn't expecting that. Another surprise to me was
that I'm finally getting fitter - able to go faster at a lower pulse
rate- after plateauing for years. The theory of my "Equality Diet" is
that by keeping blood glucose as level (and low) as possible it
prevents blood glucose spikes with resultant hunger and inflammation.
There is strong evidence that keeping blood glucose low reduces risk
factors and mortality see
http://bmj.bmjjournals.com/cgi/conte...ed/322/7277/15. To
achieve low blood glucose I eat 6 to 7 equal calorie meals (400
calories) spaced approx. evenly over the day. Each meal has a low
glycemic index and load. I eat no refined grains, added sugars, or
white potatoes. I eat as little as possible of saturated fat, but eat
monosaturated and polyunsaturated - getting as much of 40% of total
calories as "good" fat. I generally get at least 8 servings of fruts
and veggies, at least 5 servings of whole grains, at least 5 servings
of nuts, and at least one serving of oily fish and one alcoholic drink
per day. I average 2700 calories a day - a lot until you consider that
I burn 1200 calories/day in exercise.

Congratulations Brad !! Those words don't seem enough for someone like you
who has put a lot of time and effort into finding a woe/wol that works for
them. Maybe I missed the post (or maybe I just plain don't remember), but
what drives you to this detail? Is it health related? I imagine anyone
who has had health problems is more motivated than someone like myself who
just wants to avoid future health problems.

I'm curious about the alcohol, is there a specific reason you include it
in your WOE or just because you enjoy the taste etc?

Beverly,

Yes, I'm running a little scared - my sister, who's only 3 years older
than I am has already had 3 strokes. Many of my relatives have
diabetes. So I'm doing all I can not to follow in their footsteps.

Susan,

I have a drink a day purely for medicinal reasons - in fact, I don't
want it to taste too good. I buy the cheapest vodka I can find and
mix a shot of it with salt-free V8 juice. There is a large body of
evidence that moderate drinking reduces heart disease, diabetes, and
mortality. Of course, heavy drinking is harmful, so docs are
reluctant to rec drinking for fear of lawsuits, etc. As far the the
benefits of moderate drinking, please judge for yourself from Harvard
School of Public Health website:
http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritio...e/alcohol.html
