Dietary Lactic Acid Metabolism
How does the body process dietary lactic acid in yogurt or sauerkraut.
Is it treated as a fat or carbohydrate? Is it broken down in the intestine before absorption or is it absorbed unaltered? Does the liver convert it to glucose or fats? Thx |

Thx I It is not a fat or fatty acid in which lipases act upon it and it is not broken down through beta oxidation to create ketone bodies. It is not a carbohydrate as they are not acids. It is more of a TCA acid. The acid portion of lactic acid is absorbed or not based on acid-base considerations. Excess acid is eliminated via the lungs as CO2 and in the urine. The lactate anion portion of the acid or the salt portion is accepted into the TCA cycle in which it will eventually be eliminated as CO2. The absorption process through the GI tract is not really a big active thing as most lactic acid is a metabolic byproduct resulting from the anaerobic process. In the muscle when too much lactate is produced it is sent to the liver which converts it to glucose also known as the Cori cycle. 2 lactate plus 6 ATP goes to glucose plus 6 ADP plus 6 Pi. It enters the citric acid cycle through the action by lactate dehydrogenase. lactate plus NAD goes to pyruvate plus NADH plus H gluconeogenesis is an energy requiring process so it is only used when not enough glucose is available. In short the body, and many tissues can utilize lactate but for any active absorption by the gut often requires energy and often through Na dependent secondary active transport process. "The capacity of the small intestine to absorb large amount of free sugars is enormous. It has been estimated that hexose's equivalent to 22 pounds of sucrose could be absorbed daily. There appears to be little physiological control of sugar absorption. However, chemoreceptors and osmoreceptors in the proximal small intestine control the motility and emptying of the stomach through a negative feedback process medicated by hormones and neural reflexes. As an example, a volume of isotonic citrate solution of 750 ml placed in the stomach passes into the small bowel in 20 minutes. The volume delivered in the same time is reduced if sucrose or glucose is added to the citrate solution. The amount delivered is related inversely to the sugar concentration." The above gives you a good idea about passive lactate, related to citrate (TCA), absorption in relation to active absorption. |

SANALAC is the BEST on the market...OR you can make Milk SAFE by doing the FOLLOWING: Bring the milk you buy up to a simmer for about 10 to 20 minutes and stop just as the first BOIL starts, The let it cool over night, In the Morning you will find tis nasty looking "PANCAKE" on top. Filter it and its associated crumbs OUT of the milk and cool it. You will experience a nice tasting and longer lasting product as well. HEALTH is but a "PROCEDURE" away! Its UP to YOU..No one will do it for you!! "WIC" is a murdering bunch of *******s and the yearly "SIDS" count shows it!! Ask my second daughter who's been buried now for 38 yrs. She appeared to e and was VERY angry,,,I did not blame her as her parents were too ignorant at the time to save her. At least 3 more have made it OK once we learned WHAT it was that killed her!
