Social eating ?
I know if this way of eating is going to do me any good .. I have to
look as some of the factors that cause me to overeat (calories). I know that hubby and I , since the kids were born, have used Eating out as our special "time together". It seems now to be routine or habit. We always eat too much, and too rich of foods during this. It's something we chose when we first had the kids, because Eating a relaxing meal was a luxury without the kids interrupting or needing help at the table. I sincerely need to find other activities to replace this eating out 'routine'. Occassionally we got bowling. Most of our activities (like movies) involve eating. Going for walks is out of the question, as hubby hates to do that. Can anyone relate ? Does anyone have any ideas on Hobbies or Activites to replace our "social eating " when we have an evening out without the kids ? ~Karen~ 225/191/140ish start Jan17/03 Started at the gym September/03 |

Then getting out on your own is a necessity. Anyway, my husband and I took up curling once a week together. I had never curled before (or even seen it done) so it was quite a learning experience. But we've had a great time. We now play once a week together and once a week on a Ladies and Mens team. The cost is fairly minimal, equipment not expensive and it's social. (Besides, all that sweeping gets off some calories too) Maybe check it out? Brenda |

Do that. Or go shoot pool, that's fun too. Movies if you can forgo the snacks. Do y'all like theater? Even if you don't in general, you may like it if a local theater troup near you does an improv night, there are a few in my town and they're always a riot. I like karaoke, but I'm a dork. If you want something where you can dress all fancy, maybe some art shows? If I currently had a mate, I'd take swing dance classes together. I guess you'll just have to figure out something you both like. But I know if I had someone who liked bowling, I'd go as often as possible. -- -Michelle Levin (Luna) http://www.mindspring.com/~lunachick http://www.mindspring.com/~designbyluna |

Going for walks is out of the question, as hubby hates to do that. Can anyone relate ? Yes! Bowling is one thing we do... here in Huntsville, the AMF bowling alley has something called "Anytime Practice League". For $10 per person, you bowl 3 games each and you record your scores on a league sheet (which no one else sees except the person at the counter as far as I can tell). The nice thing is that you get coupons for 6 free games for each of you to use in the next 2 weeks. You can bowl the 'league' any time you want. They have the usual snack bar with nothing appropriate for LC so we just make sure to eat before we go. Plus the bowling goes really fast when there is just 2 of you cause you bowl 'league' style (you use 2 lanes). The snack bar at the lanes where we go is nice enough to put out a pitcher of ice water and cups. Also, you can bowl this every week or once a month or however you want. We also get out and play some tennis. We play catch in the backyard - softball, that is :P (hmmm, the other sounds fun) We're thinking seriously about getting a basketball goal for our driveway now. We also like to play pinball when we can find it. Occasionally we play pool - although it can be hard to find without a smoky environment. Today we drove up to the Nashville Fairgrounds for their once-monthly flea market. It was huge, so we got plenty of walking in. We're also contemplating dance lessons - my husband is probably trying to figure out where to get some steel-toed boots first g. Other people have given good ideas for alternatives, but I don't see why you need to give up your social eating. You can still go out to eat together, just change the emphasis from stuffing yourselves (I'm paraphrasing) to enjoying the ambience, the time to be alone together, not having to do the dishes, etc. Eating out can be great on low carb. Maybe if you have associations at particular restaurants, e.g. they make the best pasta dishes, you might want to give them a miss, but you can make a new hobby of seeking out low carb friendly places to try.
