Default Breyers Carbsmart Ice cream /Chef's Choice

I found the Breyers Carbsmart fudge bars(3 impact) and Ice cream (4
impact)in Walmart supercenter here in Fredericksburg, Va the Chef's
Choice frozen meals Total carbs run 9-12 (lower when u subtract the
fiber)as well as the Natures own Wheat and Fiber bread (5 impact per
slice) They all ran under 3.00. LE carb is something like 2.14 for 4
servings vs 2.49 for 16 Breyers. I tried the Carbsmart fudge bars they
are GREAT the taste was much better then LeCarb and Blue bunny bars to
me. We haven't tried the meals yet but hoping they are good. Will make
my life a bit easier at 3.00 a meal. The husband can have take them
for lunch.

Enjoy

In Europe the total carb count on nutritional labels show only the number of
carbs left after fiber has been deducted. In the US the total carb count
includes fiber.

Fiber is technically a carbohydrate but it is not metabolised, hence the
deduction. Fiber will not show up in the total calorie count for a product
because of this.

Where things get dicey in "net carb" counts is when companies deduct sugar
alcohols too. Sugar alcohols are metabolised, despite food company hype,
and they ARE included in the total calorie count for that reason. Food
companies put some disclaimer on their labels saying that sugar alcohols "do
not raise blood sugar" and hence can be ignored, but this is debateable and
a wise low carb dieter does not assume that sugar alcohol carbs (or
calories) don't count until they've tested them carefully to see if this is
true in their own case.

As a bit of a newcomer to all this, can someone explain the
significance of refering to a carb count which is lower when 'you
subtract the fiber'? This may explain the problem I have raised
elsewhere on this forum, where (high fiber) Psyllium Husks sold in USA
are (at least sometimes) shown as having about 85% carbs, whereas in
UK they are shown as around 7%.

Thanks and regards, David

By subtracting the fiber and sugar alcohols means you are only counting NET
carbs. Net carbs are only those types of carbs that have a noticable impact
on blood sugar levels. If a food has 12g total carbs, 8g of fiber and 2g of
sugar alcohol, the net carb count is 2 carbs. For most people, fiber and
sugar alcohol do not have a significant impact on blood sugar levels.

For some people, sugar alcohols do have an impact on blood sugar levels, so
they sould count them as carbs. I believe the only way to tell is to try
them and see. Someone else may have a better way to determine their
effects.

I hope this helps.

ADC,
Thanks for the sodium reminder. I was just so happy to find a cheap,
quick alternative that I forgot about the salt. Got them for my
husband for lunch at work. The husband and I are both low carbing but
my son and I have several allergies in common
(Wheat, soy, corn, citrus, nuts +).My son can have wheat product( lots of
low carb foods have wheat by products or base) but not chicken and I
can have chicken but not wheat. OF course my husband and daughter
don't have food allergies . Therefore,I have to come up with meals
that we call all eat. SO ,you can see why I was so excited. Pre made
meals = less work for me.

I actually tried the Carb SmartIce cream lastnight. The Vanilla was
good But the Chocolate was GREAT. You just dont know how happy I am to
find a good tasting ice cream alternative. With all my allergies Ice
cream is one of the few treats I can enjoy but, I tended to go over
board when I did eat it. I am happy to say I had no problem with one
serving of the Carbsmart.

Peace
Tina

I think it's great that we have an alternative for fast, easy meals. I have
a few in my freezer -- just in case. Good luck and keep up the good work!

FYI - We read about this ice cream and saw it in the store so we bought some
of the chocolate and it did taste great.

Then this morning I went to put it in Fitday and was reading the ingredients
and the 5th ingredient (after polydextrose & sorbitol)was high fructose corn
syrup. Splenda was 2nd to the last on the ingredient list.

Thanks, went to the store and got Strawberry Breyers. Very good although no
hunks of berry that I could find but that would add carbs. I'm going to make
some strawberry syrup to pour over it for a sundae. I was also impressed by
the price, 4.99 for a half gallon! Last week I bought Atkin's chocolate ice
cream which wasn't that great but it was about the same price for 4 little
tiny containers.
