Ok..
I need suggestions on where to start getting back to losing lifestyle. Some info about me. I'm 5'6 almost 40 2 kids, 2 divorces.. one recent, and i'm THRILLED that its over! live in a small town but have a rec center I could get a membership at, a great park with a trail for walking. I work 55+ hours a week at a job I love I have very little in the way of a support network I feel like hell all the time, rather its a cold.. allergies..aches..not enough sleep - I dunno. But my body hurts. I fell back in Jan and broke my left ankle and twisted my left knee. I just got out of my walking cast 2 weeks ago, it still swells up when I'm on it too much and my steps have to be really careful right now. I lost down to under 200 a few years ago and I felt fantastic I kept it off until last year when things got stupid in my marriage and it all started coming back on. I guess my first obvious goal would be 200. My eating is a mess.. I am back to drinking dr. peppers on occassion, fried foods, and all sorts of crap, in portions that could feed 3-4 dieting folks. God only knows how many carbs per day. I'm one of those gals that people say things like "she's beautiful in the face.." I've got what I feel a great sense of humor and a terrific outlook on the whole. I know that I can get back to where I was when I fell off track - I just dont know how to get that mindset back..Where is that gal I was becoming? Susan 285/210/160 |

Often it's easier to start with making a few changes at a time such as cutting out the Dr. Pepper, substituting fruit for the calorie-laden snacks, etc. Many in the group use www.fitday.com to track food and exercise. It's free but you do need to register. Another good site is http://www.stumptuous.com/cms/index.php for diet and exercise information. Krista's site is fantastic and most of us have used it over the years. It also helps to post and read each day. There's lots of information available, don't feel shy about asking At the present we seem to have a rash of trolls but they come and go. Beverly |

Look at the options the rec center has... if they have a pool, that might be a good option for recovering from your ankle injury. Even if you don't swim, water walking can be a start. Pain is a good motivation for losing weight... that's where I'm at, and I keep thinking about how much I hurt all the time when temptation strikes. You are probably going to have to take it easy some with the injury. Go slow on weight bearing exercise. I lost down to under 200 a few years ago and I felt fantastic I kept it off until last year when things got stupid in my marriage and it all started coming back on. I guess my first obvious goal would be 200. Stress'll do that. You can still get back there though! And you aren't the first to rebound. Heaven knows, I've been there a few times! This is where I'd start. You can't hit exercise hard and heavy while recovering from injury, so start with the eating. You can't exercise away many bad eating choices anyway, so it's probably most important to get a handle on moderate and healthy eating anyway. You don't have to do it all at once, but start making some changes to your eating choices. Cutting back or eliminating the Dr. Peppers would be a very good start. Try water or green tea if you can. But there are other options if those don't appeal. Look at your kitchen pantry/fridge. If it is full of snack foods, processed foods, candy, cookies, etc... get RID of them. Seriously, if it's there and beckoning, the best willpower in the world will eventually fail you. Give it away, take it to a local food bank, throw it out, leave it for the postman, the paperboy, whatever. Make your home a safe place for good healthy eating! Then, once the crap is out, go grocery shopping. Bring home nice lean meats, poultry, fish, lots of veggies and fruits. Some whole grains are a good idea as well. Read labels for anything like sauces or salad dressings, and look for those with healthy oils/fats and low sugar. I find that not having bad choices around leads me to actually prepare and eat the healthy choices. If you can, pick a time (I like mornings or before bed) to actually prepare some healthy snacks or meals for the day ahead of you. I like to do up several salads in two cup ZipLoc plastic containers. I pre-cook and freeze chicken in daily portions, sometimes do the same with beef or pork. So, every night, I put some in the fridge to defrost, then mornings, I put together little salads with spinach, bell peppers, cucumber, radish, a slice of red onion, really, whatever vegetable is handy can go in! And chopping up enough for a days worth of servings saves time! I keep cottage cheese and low fat plain yogurt handy for snacks, along with a variety of nuts and some skim cheese. Make up big recipes of healthy food, things like chili, soups, stews and freeze in portion sizes. Only defrost a portion at a time. I know that I can get back to where I was when I fell off track - I just dont know how to get that mindset back..Where is that gal I was becoming? She's still there. I feel the same way. It's like HOW did I do this to myself again?! WHY did I let all that hard work go? Yet, it happened and it's up to me to turn it around again. I think the first few times I lost weight, I had more excitement about it. That has lessened. I'm thinking it's maybe a good thing, because ultimately, if I do reach goal, then I have to find other motivators to stay there than simply being excited over the next pound lost. This is kind of a pluggin' along for life kind of change. I do like the way I feel when I eat healthier! -- Cynthia 262/241.5/152 |

Susan could drink Diet Dr Pepper (wikipedia says they dropped the period in the 1950's). Easier that way. Stress'll do that. Americans ate lots of refined foods in the 1950's, but the American (U.S.A.an) obesity epidemic is a thing of modern times. I suspect that the stress caused by globalization is more the cause of obesity than any other factor. Stress causes hedonistic eating, and we know what that leads to. Sean |

Welcome... back... (saw the post to cubit).
You certainly have your hands full being single, 2 kids and a busy job. With your injuries (and your weight) it is best to give your body plenty of time to heal before you venture into the exercise area. If you have access to a pool, that might a good way to exercise while giving your body the time to heal. The stress of your life could be leading to some of your overall unwell feeling. That coupled with the poor food quality choices and lack of exercise. If you can incorporate more healthy foods into your daily intake and cut back on the junk and sodas you'll be taking a step in the right direction. I know I sleep better when I exercise, and that makes me feel better all around. Likewise with food, the better I eat, the better I feel. DH and I have adopted an 80/20 plan. 80% of the time we eat healthy, 20% we allow junk. That way we don't feel deprived but most of the time we are eating good. "Susan" wrote in message oups.com...
