@NOSPAM.14140.invalid says...

Consider this Atkins Endulge chocolate bar:

### Atkins Endulge Chocolate Crunch Candy Bar Here's a sweet reward for
### all your healthy eating!

This is the part that bothers me. My life-long problems with food have
their roots in the way my family used food as a reward -- or the
withholding of it as punishment. I'll bet there are many in this ng who
can identify with that.

I think it's important for those of us who are trying to change our
relationships with food to break the link between sweet-tasting foods
and "reward." We need to find better ways to reward ourselves.

Well, I agree completely. Rewarding yourself with food and emotional
eating in general is a bad thing and the atkins marketers are
reinforcing that.

I agree wholeheartedly with both of you on this point. Well said, both of
you!

Newbies, unfortunately

You may be right. But by "newbies" you really mean "people without critical
thinking skills." For such people, a lifetime of experience on USENET is
not likely to help them learn not to take something that appears on the
screen as absolute truth. For people who understand that something you
overhear a perfect stranger say on the bus is not to be taken as rock solid
fact, being a newbie to USENET or to a diet plan is not going to erase their
analytic skills and make them instantly gullible.

OK, you advocate not eating junk food. Could you please post what you
do eat? For example, what's on today's menu? Perhaps you example could
be instructive to us so please be as specific as possible (not two
pounds of fresh vegetables, but the names of the vegetables and
quantities of each). Thanks!

The way you pose that question, it looks like you are expecting him
to answer in ten words or less grin. Do you really think there is
that little food left on the planet once junk-food is eliminated from
one's life?

The produce section of my grocery store has so many options to
choose from that I often have trouble limiting it to a few items ;-)

What is so offensive about the statement "junk food is worthless."?
People can eat all the junk food in the world they want. I actually
*advocate* that people eat all the junk food they want. But I am
also an advocate of not kidding oneself that it is somehow a
worthy (read: necessary) item of food.

Nope. I am not saying that at all. I'm just saying that everyone's
interpretation is different, to some extent -- that there are gray areas
depending on your perspective. I mean, I think that everyone here would
agree that a Snickers bar is junk food and raw broccoli is not but what
would people say about mashed potatoes (not faux)? How about breads?
I mean, there are some areas where we may be in disagreement.

What's so gray area about it?

Mashed potatoes made with potatoes, a bit of butter and a bit of milk
and seasonings are a perfectly acceptable and natural food. However
for those following a low-carb diet they are not recommended because
they are a highly starchy and addictive, triggery food. (For many,
that is the whole point of low-carbing, to rid oneself of the objects
of their addictions and have a better relationship with food)

For me, I avoid potatoes in all their forms, like the plague, because
they trigger ME, but if someone else can eat a real potato and not
be triggered, big deal... I wouldn't call it junk food.

How about breads?

What about them? Again, it depends on the ingredients.
If it is a natural food made with real ingredients, then for those
who CAN eat it (I cannot, but I wouldn't go so far as to call it
"junk food"), no big deal.

Ignoramus's post was not about breads and potatoes. He
was talking about junk food. Obvious junk food. Whatever
NATURAL foods people have to eliminate from their diets for
whatever reasons, does not mean they are junk food.

For instance, a majority of grains (not just overprocessed
white flour), like barley, oats, wheat, I would not say they are
"junk food", but I cannot eat them.

However, I think we can agree that the item in the subject header,
"Atkins Endulge Premium Ice Cream", is junk? I'm sure there are
many people who can eat it and not become addicted to it,
but it does not mean it is not a junk food.

I mean, there are some areas where we may be in disagreement.

Who cares? Ultimately, a person chooses what goes into their
OWN body, and does not have to answer or apologize to anyone
here on this group. Some people get all defensive and whatnot
over what other people's opinions are. Does it REALLY matter?

One can argue black and blue about whether or not a food is
good, bad, junk, nutritious, or otherwise, but it's up to an individual
to make up his/her own mind as to whether they want to eat it.

Cheers

This week only, I am logging my food into fitday because I want to
check if I get all vitamins etc from my food. I am trying to decide if
I need to take vitamin pills. So, I log all that I eat, with the
caveat that I eyeball all quantities instead of really weighing
them. So, maybe instead of 6 ounces of something I actually ate 5 or
7. Take quantities with a grain of salt if you wish.

I usually log everything in the morning -- stuff from last night, as
well as breakfast and the food I took with me to work for lunch. So,
in today's log, you will see my lunch food in addition to breakfast
food.

I am not doing this to show off, again, but to figure out how I meet
my nutrients. I asked sci.life-extension whether I need extra vitamins
and I will use this data to make conclusions.

Some foods are approximations. Example. I ate fried liver yesterday
(without breading). Could not find it in fitday and entered braised
liver.

You are welcome. I was surprised to see just how many calories I get
from fat. I guess I am lowcarbing to a greater extent than I
supposed. (today's number is not relevant because I do not get as much
fat in evenings) If you have any comments, I will be delighted to hear
from you, as you are one of the few people who tend to know what they
are talking about.

I only noticed two things. Firstly, you are not a big fruit eater, are
you? Mostly veggies (neither here nor there I suppose, I just noticed
that is all). Secondly, are you currently getting all of your calcium
from cheese, spinach and broccoli? I was just wondering since we just
had the calcium discussion.

Out of curiousity, how do you pack your lunch? I mean, how do you carry
it in? Do you have a break room or lunch area or do you end up eating
at your desk?

He doesn't seem to eat a lot of what is _commonly known as_ a fruit
but technically, 6 small tomatoes 115 calories worth are a fruit.

I eat a lot of fruit, but people don't see bell peppers, tomatoes,
olives or cucumbers, as a fruit, simply because they are lower
in fructose :-)

Now now! Don't get Ig started on that. We went through that a few
weeks ago and he concluded that he was happy that the Supreme Court was
on his side ;-) Ig considers tomatoes to be vegetables. You and I
know that botantically, well...

But you are correct, I was referring to apples, oranges and bananas and
not tomotoes ;-)
