Just went out to get gas, on the radio I heard a spiel about the diabetes
epidemic and how people needed to exercise and learn to eat right. And then
they quoted some doctor who said if you must eat fast food look for the
things with the lowest calories, sugar and carbohydrates. No mention of fat.
Low carb marches on.

I read that earlier today, and thought 'it's about time!'

Hi, Peaches, I'm Fat Old Broad over here. :-) This used to be a great
group but there isn't much influx of new people. A few of the old faithful
hang out to answer questions if someone wanders in. I learned a lot over
the years but the zing has left the group.

OMgoodness...I have been here off and for years, but got so tired of the bs
that went around, and nothing about LC, so I unsubed about a year ago.
Stopped in to see if it ever went back to what it once was, you know, LC,
and nope nothing changed.
Nice to see you here, too...didn't know that was you...duh

I've noticed a change lately also in mainstream doctors finally
recognizing metabolic syndrome as a precursor to diabetes and starting
to recommend low sugar/low glycemic carbs along with moderating
saturating fats. It's sure a start.

BTW, after a decade of posting to ASDLC I still poke my nose in once a
week or so to see if there are any interesting posts or if anything
new is happening. Usually the NG just overrun by spam, I delete
everything and move on.

Awe the fats issue. Personally I am not so down on the sat fats.
While I do try to get a variety of omega-3 fats. But for some cooking
I use the truly saturated fat coconut grease. Animal fats are less
saturated than the dieticians realize in that they have high
levels of the proinflammatory polyunsaturated fatty acid
arachidonic acid.

Use of a LC has got my stomach down 6 inches over a couple
of years or less.

I tried coconut oil once but it seemed to give me a cough, so I mostly use
butter or sunflower seed oil or sometimes olive oil for cooking in. Maybe I
should try it again though I do think I remember starting and stopping more
than once to see if it truly was the cause.

Well read low carbers tend to not worry about animal fats. Essentially
every study that has ever been down to show problems with saturated fats
was done with high carb eating test subjects. Try it with low carbers
and the results don't track. It isn't the saturated fats that is the
problem - It is the sum of carb calories plus saturated fat calories.

While I do try to get a variety of omega-3 fats. But for some cooking
I use the truly saturated fat coconut grease.

I like the slight subtle flavor. I get it in the Hispanic row of the
local grocery. It's cheap there. When I see the fancy extra virgin
coconut oil in the specialty row of the local grocery store it's
expensive.

Animal fats are less
saturated than the dieticians realize in that they have high
levels of the proinflammatory polyunsaturated fatty acid
arachidonic acid.

Generally low carb tends to reduce inflammation so having one fatty acid
that is proflamitory ends up a net reduction.

There's little down side to replacing animal fat with your choice of
plant fat if you want to do that. It's possible to find studies of
equal calories one high in animal fats and another replacing much of
the animal fats with polyunsaturated fats - Such studies appear to give
a slight edge in weight loss to replacing the animal fats. It appears
to be a lot of work for a small but real advantage.
