Vita-nutrients?
 
Howdy folks,

I've been on Atkins and daily excersize (walking and weight training) since
July and I've gone from 235 to 209. I'm shooting for 185. Anyway, I've
supplemented my diet with a daily multi-vitamin. Centrim or it's equivalent.
Is that enough? Should I take more dietary supplements?

Howdy Ray,

I used to take a generic "equate" brand multivitamin, but I soon was
supplementing it with Calcium, Magnesium, Zinc and Potassium for leg
cramps. Then I read where the omega-3 fatty acids are good for you,
so I started taking fish oil capsules. Then I started worrying about
my skin and stretching or sagging, so I started taking vitamin E
supplements...and then I got tired of drinking metamucil, so I started
taking psyllium capsules...I was starting to think I had to take a
pill minder around with me everywhere g

So I simplified, and now just use the Atkins brand "core 4" vitamins
available at my local Wal-Mart. They consist of: "Basic 3" ($14.42
for 90); "Essential Oils" ($10.34 for 60); "Accel" ($10.42 for 45) and
"Dieters Advantage" ($7.23 for 60). It works out to be $1.99 a day
for the doses. They are a little more expensive than generic, but I
think they will probably have the stuff I need and I like to keep
things simple.

If I wanted to work at it, I probably could compare ingredients and
perhaps find generic equivalents, but I don't feel the need to rock
the boat, and these vitamins are the only Atkins brand products I use
right now as frankenfoods don't interest me much.

I eat those fish oil caps by the handful. Another thing you might
want to look into is octacosanol.

So I simplified, and now just use the Atkins brand "core 4" vitamins

No question you are paying more but time can be money too.

I agree about the Atkins "frankenfoods." My nephew likes them a lot,
but he can have them. Low carb versions of stuff like pancakes
doesn't appeal to me, even if they weren't outrageously priced.

If you are in agreement with the philosophy of Dr Atkins you may want to
read first: "Dr Atkins' Age-Defying Diet" or second: "Dr Atkins'
Vita-Nutrient Solution."
What you ultimately decide to take as supplements depends upon your buy-in
to the supplement philosophy. There are supplements you can take to assist
in losing weight, improve health, or treat a condition.

Dr Atkins' Basic 3 multi-vitamin is a good starting point but you will soon
discover that additional amounts or additional supplements are beneficial.
Consider these and the dosages:

Co-Q10
B-Complex
Fish Oil
Flax Oil
Borage Oil
(Dr Atkins combines the oils in one product but they are far less expensive
if you shop around and buy each individually)
Vitamin C
Vitamin E
Selenium
Lipoic Acid
other antioxidants
Magnesium
DHEA
EGCG
other Bioflavonoids
