As far as I;m concerend they;re dangerous to take anytime unless your health
is so far gone you're at the "I'll do anything to live another day" stage

I've been taking Lipitor for some years. It's not liver-friendly, but does
control the cholesterol and I really doubt that cutting down on carbs should
stop one from taking it. However the diet improved my cholesterol levels so
much that I reduced the dose from 20mg to 10 last September and I've just
had blood work done which still shows Total 159, HDL 87, LDL 63.4, TGL 43
so I'm going to discuss with my doctor dropping the Lipitor altogether.

Go to the NIH's site

and enter the word "policosanol."

Do this, then post again on this thread. That's a challenge.

I read some of those articles. Sounds like this policosanol stuff sounds
promissing. As soon as they can make it expensive enough I'm sure DR's will
be prescribing it all over the place

This is one whopping non sequitur. The subject is statin drugs and
not policosanol based drugs. Statin drugs should be banned since any
benefit they allegedly produce in terms of total cholesterol reduction
can be obtained with a low carb diet without any of the potentially
lethal side effects.

LETHAL side effects?

What kind of lethal side effects......?

My Dr. has me on Lipitor and it lowered my cholesterol by quite a bit.

Potentially lethal.

Rare cases of rhabdomyolysis with acute renal failure secondary to
myoglobinuria have been reported with atorvastatin and with other
drugs in this class.

Every benefit has a cost. The risk from the statins is very slight,
but it is real. Personally, I feel much better knowing I am
controlling my cholesterol through diet and exercise without drugs (I
was on Zocor for almost a year).

I take statins (a low dose of Lipitor). I have been LC for almost 6
years now. My cholesterol was unchanged (either up or down) with
LCing. It was not *very* high but it combined with my diabetes (which
is helped but not eliminated by LC) it was a larger risk factor than
my doctor felt comfortable not addressing.

We discussed the matter and he felt that I would benefit from a dose
especially since my diet and exercise regime was already healthy but
not altering my profile.

Since I'm already having twice-yearly blood tests to keep track of my
long-standing kidney problems (that 'spontaneously' repaired
themselves in the 12 months after I started LC) it was no big deal to
ALSO include tests to make sure the Lipitor is helping and not harming
me.

Since starting on Lipitor, my total cholesterol has dropped to normal
(instead of borderline-high), with LDL reductions and HDL increases.
My triglycerides have also dropped, which was NOT the case with LC
alone.
