I picked this book up at Border's yesterday. Definitely not for LC purists, as
it allows about 75 grams of carbs a day and puts no limits on fruit and veggies
and lean meats and cheese...and only starchy carbs count towards the daily
total(!) The idea is to offer a sustainable WOE for those who repeatedly fall
off the LC wagon. Kind of similar to Sugar Busters, but more liberal,
carb-wise, and much better written (Katherine Chauncey is the author) with
tons more useful info (in keeping with the whole Dummies series). Just
wondering if anyone has read it and what you think.

I haven't read the book, but from what you describe it ignores the
Atkins approach. In the Atkins diet, getting into ketosis is the key,
and you have to figure out for yourself how many carbs that is because
the number of carbs per day varies from person to person.

True, but many of us here are not following Atkins...there are many other low
carb plans that do not require ketosis but are also effective. I've lost
steadily on both Protein Power and Carb Addicts, both of which are generally
against the ketosis concept.

Yes, I'm aware of people losing weight by cutting carbs. The question is
why? If you're not burning fat, which is what you're doing in ketosis,
why are you losing weight?

what is the experience of the author?

Sounds like a pretty good lifetime maintenance for those whos bodies do not fair
well with carbs. 75 grams sure beats 400 or more.

The book "Life Without Bread" recommends 72 grams of carbs per day as the
optimal level.

I always wonder how people come up with numbers like this. Why not 70?
This is a nice number. I've joined eHarmony.com, and they use 29
dimensions to match you with prospective mates. Why 29 and not 30?
Surely they could make up another "dimension" so that you could have 30
dimensions.

Sometimes I think these numbers are totally made up: "If we make it 72
(or 29), it'll look as if we've done more research; 70 (or 30) makes too
much sense."

From reading the posts here, it's apparent that a lot of people use LC
as a calorie-restriction diet. It's not Atkins, it doesn't apply to
insulin-sensitive individuals, but it seems to work for some people
that way.

you're right--29 just has a nicer ring to it than 30, doesn't it? lol By the
way, good luck with eHarmony. They've been advertising like crazy on TV in the
Philly area in the last month.

Mine never registerred at all no matter how often I used them but I
did manage to lose 45 pounds.
