View Full Version : Clean and Crisper Taste of Liquid Splenda - Sweetzfree ?

I had misplaced my tiny bottle of sweetzfree and had to go back to using
the Splenda in the yellow packet which by volume is mostly Dextrose and
malodextrin.
After I had ordered, paid for and received my new bigger bottle of
Sweetzfree, I found my old tiny one.
I noticed, or think I noticed, a cleanser and crisper taste of the pure
liquid sucralose.
I tried running a double blind experiment, but it is messy and almost
dangerous to be blindfolded while pouring hot coffee and sweetner into cups.
Does anyone else have this impression?

I know that once the bottle gets old stuff starts to crystalize on the
outside. That makes getting the top on/off harder I don't know what that
means in terms of taste, though. I wonder if long-term exposure to air
makes a difference. There is a very different taste between what's in the
bottle and what's in the packets, at least in coffee.

Well, at least there are two of us with that taste difference thing - at
least for coffee.
On the air exposure issue.
Sucralose in the paper packets is literally open to the atmosphere,
well, pretty much so. And there is no "best by" or "sell by" or "use by"
date on the cardboard Splenda box.
So, I would conclude that there is little concern about air exposure if
the packets of Dextrose, Maltodextrose and Sucralose can be sold with no
expiration dates with just paper and cardboard packaging.
As to the white crust. I'll bet it is sweet as all get out.
Go ahead, lick it off and let us know how it tastes.
If you die, I'll come to your funeral and accept the blame in a
heartrending eulogy.

CAUTION -
It would be better to rinse off the white crust with a little water, and
taste the water to see if it is sweet like ordinary sucralose.
My chemistry isn't good enough to tell you just how stable the sucralose
molecule is. I would guess the chemical stability is pretty similar to
regular sucrose sugar because of the small chemical differences.
There must be somebody with good organic chemistry skills here.

I have swished the top of the bottle (closed) around in hot tea when it got
crusty and it sweetens just fine. If you lick your fingers after messing
with the top you will find them vey sweet.

I've already done the licking thing (I'm the only one who uses the bottle in
my office) and it is sweet - it's coming from the splenda syrup.

I'm still here. Of course, I might drop dead next week. But I did the
licking thing quite some time ago. Sometimes, I'll even flake it off to
sweeten my coffee.

Just thought I'd let you know you made me chuckle out loud. I could
just picture a guy performing this experiment. Chris Farley would be
perfect for this. It's too bad he's not here any more.

Yes, I do have that same impression... that it's dangerous to pour hot
liquids while blindfolded.

Duh!,
Don't you have 2 cups that are identical. Hint - tape on the bottom?

It really takes two to do a double blind test. You fool yourself if you
try to doubleblind yourself.
All my coffee cups are custom made, no two alike.
That part of my post was mistyped. The :-) was missing.
