I've been doing LC since late last year (loving every bit of it too, I
may add and achieved my goal 6 months ago).

Originally I also heard that artificially sweetened drinks were a no-no
since they could result in stalls, but I honestly haven't noticed this,
and I can't see how they could do this.

In fact, I've drunk whole 2 litre bottles of Pepsi Max, and it just
doesn't affect either my blood glucose nor does it produce stalls (or
lead to weight gain).

Maybe if drinking artificially sweetened drinks also entices you to eat
carb-laden foods, then that may result in a stall, but otherwise,... I
can't see how it could.

Hope this gives you the courage to face those 2 cans of diet coke! ;-)

Cheers

I didn't stop. I have lost 95 pounds in a little over a year so it
didn't slow me down much. I think it is an individual thing though. You
may have problems with it. Just try and see what happens.

Pepsi max has no caffeine. Diet coke does unless it's the one with a gold
label what says caffeine free. It's suggested that the caffeine may make it
more difficult to lose weight.

I was a Diet Coke junkie, about 4 to 5 cans a day. I gave up Diet Coke,
because of the aspertame, I now have one Diet Cheerwine a day (sweetened with
Splenda). The aspertame makes me crave sweets, where Splenda does not. Who
knows why.

Giving up the Diet Coke helped me to drink the required amount of water, which,
if you don't drink enough water, you will stall.

Besides, I'm just happy not to be a slave to that addiction anymore, water is
cheaper and better for you. I do keep Caffeine Free Diet Coke in the house,
and have one occasionally with DaVinci's vanilla syrup, MUCH better than the
Vanilla Diet Coke.

When I started low-carbing I didn't know about Atkins or any of
the others. I just cut back on carbs. I drank lots of coffee and
diet coke -- within 6 months I had lost over 60 pounds!

I've been 'maintaining' through common sense low carbing again --
I don't count carbs, but I avoid carby stuff. I still drink my
coffee and diet cokes -- they don't seem to interfere.

They say YMMV, but from most of what I've seen on this newsgroup
it doesn't really seem to matter.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Nicole. It is good to hear that you have had such success with
diet drinks. I feel like I am endulging myself with a diet coke. It is
my treat. But my weight loss has slowed down. I guess I need to cut
back on the brazil nuts and start excersizing!

How much weight did you lose and how long did it take?

I think the "fear" has something to do with the citric acid in diet
colas...may affect your body. everyone is different. experiment on
yourself. the diet colas might also make you swell/retain water.

I Started drinking Diet Pop occasionally since I've been in OWL. I mix it
with Absolute Vanilla Vodka and it is yummy and it hasn't affected my weight
loss. YMMV

It doesn't stall me. I have coffee in the morning and soda at least
once during the day. That said, I've still cut back on my caffeine
consumption drastically from before doing low-carb, and I try to drink
as much clear water as I can.

I keep trying to switch to caffeine-free diet cola, but my husband
insists on getting the caffeinated stuff (it's his only vice, if you
don't count geek-gaming, so it's hard to rag on him about it). Still,
I drink a couple of large glasses of diet soda every day and it
doesn;t stall me -- but I'm also thinking switiching to Diet Rite,
which is both caffeine and sodium free just on general principle.

Diet Coke contains a lot of sodium. Buy pistachios eat 'em in moderation.
Brazil nuts...heard someone refer to 'em as niggah toes.

When my wife and I started Atkins together over 4 years ago, I lost
fine and she didn't. We'd never heard that aspartame could be a
problem. Then we read it on this newsgroup and switched from Diet
Coke to Diet Rite with splenda. In 4 days she dropped 4 pounds.
So in my family it stalls 50% of the population. The real chances
are probably more like 5-10%.

> I am too lazy to experiment on myself and want to learn from you.

In other words you have no intention of trying without aspartame
whether it stalls you or not, right?

Every body is different. You will never know unless you experiment on yourself.

I've also drunk plain old Diet Pepsi, and that hasn't stalled my weight
loss either.

By what mechanism is caffeine supposed to create weight loss stalls?

Cheers

I didn't have that much weight to lose - 15 kilos in total (is that
around 45 pounds?) - but I lost it in under 3 months.

I did get rather one-eyed about it though, and my daily carb intake was
always at 20 grams or less.

For the last 6 or so months I've been on maintenance, and although I
seem capable of having around 50 or 60 grams of carbs per day without
weight gain, I actually feel best (clear head, few headaches, no mental
fuzzyness, etc) when I'm on somewhere between 20 and 30 grams per day.

This means that I have to make sure I have three largish meals per day,
otherwise I tend to keep losing weight and then people start fretting
that I have an eating disorder since I get rather thin.

How have others here found the issue of post-weight-loss maintenance?
Do you find that you need to keep your carbs lower than you otherwise
could in order to maintain clearheadedness etc?

Cheers

Nicole

Pepsi MAX is a diet Pepsi variety. I personally prefer good-ole diet
pepsi since it doesn't taste as sweet, but I'll drink MAX if the choice
is between that or Diet Coke.

This is very interesting. Do you know what the stalling mechanism is?

I've looked around for tasty softdrinks sweetened with splenda, but I
can't seem to find them here in Australia. (though we can get the tablet
form of splenda which is rather cool!!!)

Cheers

I am afraid I have no idea. I have seen it written somewhere.

Mainly by stimulating insulin secretion. If you drink caffinated beverages
and then get hungry an hour or so later, you might be exhibiting this
phenomenon. Another staller is asparteme. Why, no one knows, but it does
seem to be the culprit in some few cases.

Coffee makes one urinate two times what you drink, thus you lose water...
and nutritients. Better that you also drink a cup of water for every
cup of coffee you consume.

Diet coke still contains phosphates which use up the calcium in your
bones, making you at risk for osteoporosis.

Don't mean to knock what you enjoy, but excessiwe drinking of soda
(any kind) puts you at risk for osteoporosis.
