or even stranger---- solve our problems?

always when the going gets tough I want to go to the food. I know with
alcohol/drugs it helps you forget for a while and I have gotten 'drunk'
off of rich/sugary food but you don't really escape it.
Is it a conditioned response? As a small child someone probably handed
me candy or a cookie when I fell down or was crying ....why didn't
anyone hand me a carrot stick ;-)

The first thing a mother does when a baby needs comfort is to put it to the
breast to feed. This is why we associate food with comfort. It is a
conditioned response. What we need to do is teach ourselves other ways of
making us feed comforted in times of stress.

High glycemic index foods are mood altering to many people - the temporary change in mood is addicting causing us to reach for these foods in times of stress.
